Cleaning before moving house?

Flissty · 29/08/2025 07:25

Hello,
We are in the process of buying and selling house (oh the hellish process). I quite like the young couple we are selling to.
My question is - how much cleaning do people normally do once they have moved their furniture out? My understanding (never done this before) is that on completion day there’s very little time, just get the furniture loaded into the lorry and go. But there is always dust and dirt behind furniture - even though I promise I do have a clean house! What is normal, do people move in and expect to clean clean clean or should I be running around vacuuming as the movers shift my stuff? What is the normal expectation when buying a house?
Thanks!

Everyone is mentioning making time to vacuum but in the days before moving, how about wiping out the kitchen cabinets? In some households they can get pretty sticky.

I have always done that as well.

Yes, you go around hoovering after the rooms are emptied, and a quick wipe over any dusty surfaces.

This.

you do a 7-8 out of 10 clean. The people moving in will be shattered. They will have to have the furniture put in its right place on clean hoovered floor

OldBeyondMyYears · 29/08/2025 09:59

I’ve always hired a cleaner to do a ‘move out’ clean, which includes the oven! I’d be so embarrassed if I left a house dirty, but the stress of doing it myself on top of the moving stress is just too much!

Worth every penny to have someone else take care of it 🤣👌🏻

ChopsyHatesFungus · 29/08/2025 10:24

Nothing at all.

I hate cleaning anyway and we finally left about 10pm at night to drive to the ferry port.

And in what state did you leave your property to the new owners?

Everyone has been so very helpful, thank for all the suggestions (except the ‘have some pride in yourself’ one. What a preaching, priggish tone some people like to take with strangers online!).

Thanks to everyone who took time to respond so helpfully. I didn’t know the furniture is often taken the day before, that will make it easier. Fingers crossed our sellers also care! X

the last time I moved, I paid a cleaning agency to do a deep clean, and it was spotless. Just as it was when we moved in!

mondaytosunday · 29/08/2025 11:02

‘Swept clean’ is what it usually says in contracts. However I have moved into a filthy house and I send negative energy to those sellers every time u drive down that street.

Last time I moved I got a cleaner to follow us as we emptied es h room. She wiped down all surfaces and vacuumed. She cleaned the bathrooms. I’d already had the oven professionally cleaned. I arranged for a private collection to remove all the rubbish.

I left a card and bouquet of flowers for the new people.
I would not feel right leaving it any other way.

Wow. You are touchy. What on earth is wrong with you? People are agreeing with me according to the feedback I got on that post. It was not a personal attack on you as i have no idea who you are.

Having pride in yourself is a good thing.

I left mine immaculate. I cleaned the rooms as I packed them up. Appliances and bathrooms cleaned a few days before moving day.
on the day I hoovered, dusted and cleaned the skirtings and marks on the walls etc and closed that room door. As I was walking out the house I mopped the floors.
my solicitor actually forwarded an email from the new owner who had said thank you for leaving it so clean as it mad their life so much easier.

That's cos you have pride in yourself. I did the same when selling my late mum's house 500 miles away. She wouldn't have expected anything less of me. She was extremely house proud.

StarCourt · 29/08/2025 11:45

I’ve always had a cleaner come in and give it a good going over as we are moving. Never actually moved into anywhere that’s as clean as I leave it though

ChocolateCinderToffee · 29/08/2025 15:26

Pretty much spotless. I cleaned as I packed everything up then went round after the movers with a handheld.

Yes, I think this is sufficient.

Dutchhouse14 · 29/08/2025 17:08

If you have time run hoover round after removal men empty each room, clean bathroom and kitchen day before.
Moving into a clean house is such a relief.
Unfortunately there have been occasions when we've moved and I wasn't able to clean before we left, once our ancient hoover literally finally stopped working on moving day and to make it worse spat out a load of dirt on the carpet and a second time the removers turned up late and in a lorry that was too small, The money transfer went through early in the day, about 10.30am, and we didn't own the house anymore but removers were still taking things out and new people, (who previously rented) were waiting in their car to take possession, so ended up hauling loads of stuff into our neighbours garden, it was beyond stressful. So didnt get chance to run hoover round or clean.
So if there's time definitely clean and try and prep so it's as clean as possible week before but things don't always go to plan.

justanotherdrama · 29/08/2025 17:13

When we rented before buying our first house whenever we moved out we had to have professional cleaners in and to be fair I think that’s nice for the new people moving in to make it nice for them to go into.

When we sold our house I did the same as it was a young couple and we left them loads of bits and bobs to help them get started and we still live in the same area and regularly see them and when we moved to where we are now it has been empty a while but it has been left clean and the family had it cleaned for us too.

if we moved again I would do the same I have enough to think of when we move without worrying about if we have time to get cleaned I always get people in.

Itchyoureye · 29/08/2025 10:35

Empty as required. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The buyer was an arsehole who expected us to leave her with a full tank of heating oil. As if!! 😂😂

Joystir59 · 29/08/2025 20:39

Deep clean of whole house as part of packing process e.g. empty a cupboard, pack contents then clean the cupboard. On moving day after everything's been shifted, go round with hoover and a cleaning cloth.

DiscoBeat · 29/08/2025 20:42

We're in the process of selling. We have already moved everything out and are deep cleaning the house but previously we packed most things up and cleaned behind any furniture just before so that they were clean behind and under everything, then another quick go round with the hoover and a mop as we left.

DiscoBeat · 29/08/2025 20:44

We have always left our tenants and buyers flowers, and left milk and bubbly in the fridge.

WonderingWanda · 29/08/2025 20:48

I moved recently. In the run up to moving I defrosted the built in freezer, deep cleaned the oven and bathrooms. Cleaned shelves etc as I packed. On moving say hoovered every room as it got emptied, wiped down skirting boards, mop floors etc.

StMarie4me · 29/08/2025 20:49

Gosh we’ve always left it spotless, unless being sold cheap to a builder who’s going to rip it out. Wouldn’t dream of leaving it dirty for anyone else to move into!

Floranan · 29/08/2025 20:51

I always cleaned the oven a day or two before (we’ll got a company in) then ran the vac round the empty rooms before I left and gave the bathrooms a clean. I’ve always left important papers - boiler manuals etc on the kitchen side along with any takeaways flyers I had and a note for when the bins / window cleaner etc were due.

ive moved into houses that were spotless and some that were disgusting. We moved into one years ago now that was so bad we stayed in a hotel over night. We had arrived late as it was a long distance and the removal van was coming the next day, but we had planned to blow up the mattress and camp out for the first night we had put everything we had into buying that house, I phoned my mum in tears and she sent me the money for a hotel. We can look back and smile now but at the time I was so upset.

pinkbackground · 29/08/2025 20:56

We’ve recently moved. I did a good surface clean I’d say. We did fill in and paint over picture hook marks and have a repaint to any dirty marks in the weeks leading up to the move. On move day I did a quick last minute surface clean, mopped floors, hoovered. I left tea, coffee, milk, biscuits and toilet rolls for the buyers.
