How long should a freshly-shampooed carpet take to dry?

I have just borrowed my mum's Vax Rapide XL (though she hasn't even used it herself yet!) and was planning to do our bedroom carpet today.
Mum only has the 'easy guide' version of the instructions (it was bought 2nd hand), and it doesn't mention drying times....

Any MNers know how long a carpet takes to dry?

TIA

I did mine on wen night with a vax and it was dry enough to put everything back in the room yesterday afternoon

To be fair it was the bit were the potty goes and the stains were that had a REALLY good going over that took the longest in the end i put the heating on as ds couldnt play in the living room.

Most of the rest dryed in about 24 hours.

24 hours here too

micci25 · 31/05/2008 08:35

mine is usually dry enough the next morning! i do it all the time with the vax. i normally clean mine when dd2 is sleeping so a bit more than 24 hours but not much more.

make sure you keep going over it loads of times to suck out as much water as possible. and only use vax aaa or vanish as 1001 leaves a residue on your carpet whoch attracts more dirt. i found this out the hard way! lol

i always 'rinse' with a couple of goings over with plain water, just to be sure even with vanish and vax and it does seem to stay cleaner longer that way.

Yikes! I hadn't banked on it taking anywhere near as much as 24 hours! Shows how much I know about these housey things

We only have one other bedroom and ds is in it... not sure where we would sleep until it dried off...will need to figure something out.

Thank you for the tips about the shampoo etc

I've done mine in the morning and used the room in the evening. As micci says, suck as much water out as possible.

PinkPussyCat · 31/05/2008 13:19

Do you think it'd be ok chippy? I mean there's not that much in the room, just a chest of drawers, 2 side tables (these all have feet so air could still circulate) and the bed.

I might go for it tomorrow morning then if I'm feeling spritely.

Start early, have the windows open, and suck, suck suck. Tis very satisfying to see all the muck come out - or that might just be because my carpets were really filthy

micci25 · 31/05/2008 13:21

oh i still the use the room the carpet is only damp not dripping wet if you do it in the morning it will be dry enough to sleep in by night, you just might get a bit of a damp bum if you sit on it for too long!

leave the heating or windows open while its drying and it wil be fine.

LyraSilvertongue · 31/05/2008 13:23

Mine take a couple of days to get really dry. You can sleep in the room while it dries if you don't mind getting into bed with damp feet.

x-posted with Micci.

Are you planning on moving any furniture or simply cleaning around furniture? If moving things around, don't put furniture 'legs' onto wet/damp carpet. Put a bit of tin foil under each 'leg' of tables/chairs so the wood doesn't stain the wet carpet.

"Start early, have the windows open, and suck, suck suck. Tis very satisfying..."

For a moment there I thought I'd clicked on the wrong thread!

Thanks guys, much appreciated!
