Yellow sunscreen stains on white t-shirt

Ugh. In an attempt to look a bit more put-together I spent a bit more than usual on a really lovely, good-quality white t-shirt. It developed yellow stains, which I am fairly sure are from sunscreen. They are not coming out and I am determined not to give up on the newish expensive t-shirt.

So far I have tried:

soaking in Napisan
washing in biological powder
hanging to dry in the sun

It's hanging in my garden in the hope that ongoing UV exposure will fade it but it's been three days and there's still a clear yellow mark.

Any magical remedies, please?!

Ooo following with interest! Recently got back from holiday and the yellow stains around my children’s necklines of white tees they wore are driving me insane.

Fairy liquid should work. It's a grease stain so you need something with degreasing power

joanofaardvark · 28/08/2025 11:59

You may have already set the stains with all the other things that you have done unfortunately.

I agree with soaking in plenty of washing up liquid - I do this overnight, shallow bowl of water and loads of it on the stains. then wash as usual.

If all else fails, dye it and at least you'll still have the quality t-shirt ...

I have this issue on a linen shirt, so annoying. Have done the above, considering a little purple shampoo to take the yellowness out, maybe it will help! If not I'm going to dye it!

I saw this the other day ^
I use soaking in a strong washing soda solution for really ingrained dirt or greasy stains, you could try that.

Not tried myself but read this . . . Make a paste with bicarbonate of soda & water & then apply to stain. Soak in fizzy water then wash with biological washing powder.

dontcomeatme · 28/08/2025 12:11

Sounds like you've set the stain in now unfortunately. For future stains washing up liquid and cold water work the best, for 99% of stains actually.

Search mumsnet as there have been many threads over the years about this.
A couple of years ago I ruined a white dress that I loved for holidays. I did everything and nothing got it out. This year I have mostly bought black clothes with me!!!
Good luck i hope something works for you.

Thanks all and yes, @Mumdiva99, I realise that this is a perennial subject! Having read this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/housekeeping/2976219-anyone-know-how-to-remove-yellow-stains-from-sun-cream it's currently soaking in white vinegar. I'll report back!

Following. I too have ruined white shirts I bought for a holiday. I’ve tried fairy liquid, vanish stain remover, leaving for hours in full sun and nothing has worked. Is there a type of sunblock that doesn’t wreck whites?

Mumdiva99 · 28/08/2025 13:02

@beadystar I never had the issue until I started using P20 all day sunscreen. - I love the all day protection but not the stains. (I burn relatively quickly and have been slathering on their factor 50 each day and not burnt. The stains are a small price to pay....)

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 19/09/2025 11:48

Wearing the t-shirt today and remembered I never updated! Thankfully I had not 'set' the stain. I soaked it overnight in white vinegar and in the morning rubbed neat washing-up liquid into the stain. Washed as normal with biological powder and dried in the sun. Yellow mark gone! Hope this helps someone else.

I've been living this post this week too, with stains on a much loved white cotton shirt. 😡

Don't think it's 100% there (just chucked it in with my bedding and it's on the line, to hopefully take it a bit further), but the tips for washing-up liquid, not bleaching etc. came in very useful and at least I'm now not going to end up having to dye it. I could still see it before this wash/dry/sunlight cycle, but I don't think anyone else would notice.

Will be mineral sunscreen for me in the future, see if that works as reported.
