How to make towels soft?!

Having constant issues with towels.
Admittedly I don't buy the most expensive ones.....maybe that's the issue?!
But they are constantly becoming rough with 'lumpy fibres' (not the smooth short pile appearance like when you buy them)

Tumble drying unless it's for ages isn't fixing the issue (and it's a waste of energy when the other clothes don't need it- although tips on how to make clothes especially cotton ones softer in general would be appreciated too!)

We live in a hardwater area which maybe doesn't help.Use a cheap supermarket brand laundry liquid and a more expensive branded fab conditioner such as comfort creations.
Try not to over do the quantities of these.
Line dry washing either indoors or out then try to soften in the tumbler for awhile (it can take an hour or so to properly soften clothes!)

Maybe it's the tumble dryer as its a washer dryer and not the best.

Thanks

I like M&S towels best of all.
my oldest surviving set are about 40 years old now, a bit thin compared to the newer ones but still fit for purpose.
I wash mine at 60 with no fabric conditioner, ideally tumble dry in a "proper" old school tumble drier for soft and fluffy. It may be your drier causing the issue here.

We used to have some m&s ones and they lasted for years....I'm thinking we might just have to go back to them.

Also I think as the washer dryer seems to steam them as part of the drying process it maybe doesn't help things.

Our old dryer didn't have this issue so much.

Thanks for all the replies....interesting how opinions differ around vinegar/ fab conditioner/ bicarbonate of soda!

😮

I've found my laundry comes out feeling more damp afterwards too. Red hot but damp. Is this really a thing?

No softener. Use laundry cleanser. Dry on line but 10 min blast in the tumble dryer.

I just watched Nancy Birtwistle talking about this very thing today. She says to vigorously shake your towels until you are breathless before putting on the line. This shakes up the pile and make them fluffy.

I saw a tip by Nancy Birtwhistle, who suggests shaking towels really hard before line drying as it will raise the fibres and make the towels fluffy.

I’ve just posted the same thing - sorry, didn’t see this comment.

before you dry them on the line, shake them really well, then turn them 180 degrees and shake them again.
