Help needed cooking in an electric single oven

I've just moved house & it has a built in oven, but it's electric & I've never cooked on electric before. I smoked the place out Mon trying to cook pork chops. Yesterday I just didn't even bother and had a kfc! So today the plan is jacket potato & gammon steak, but have just realised I can't cook the 2 together. Is there any way I can have both? And how do I not smoke the place out when using the grill?

could you microwave the potatoes and then bung them in the oven for 5 mins to crisp up?
I don't eat meat so don't know about the gammon, but can you fry it instead???

erm, did you leave the door open when you used the grill?

Will the potatoes taste the same microwaved? I've always been really dubious about doing that.

All my frying pans are at the bottom of a box.

Yes, should I close it then?

I've always hated the idea of cooking with electric, and the reality's as bad! It's like learning to cook all over again!

no, leave it open.
potatoes aren't totally the same, but they're certainly tasty enough, I usually do mine like it these days.

am like you though, want to get rid of the electric. ours is inherited too, but until I can afford a new kitchen it stays

i have an electric oven, i hate it. but i can cook more than one thing at a time i just out what ever takes the longest in the first my oven is tiny and will only fit in one baking tray so if was doing pototoe i would either grill or fry the gammon, all electric grills are different i know with mine you need to make sure that it is slightly open, or i would wrap that tatties in foil and just put them straight onto the oven shelf behind the tray you are doing the gammon in.

just make sure you dont burn yourself when you are reaching into get them out, like i always do

Well, thank you, am worried about turning into my ex-mil though, is microwaving potatoes just the start? I'm not going to be deep frying roasties next am I?!

I only had a new kitchen last summer, but split with xp, so have had to leave my lovely kitchen & cooker behind, for the new buyer to probably wreck.

Cool, thanks micci, I'll bear that in mind re not burning myself!

I have a newish (1.5 year's old) single electric fan oven and I love it. It's far better than the electric oven I get to use at work!
My grill smokes when it's dirty. So when the oven is cool (like first thing in the morning) have a look at the grill elements and see how much muck is on them.
I've not yet found anything ideal to clean them with... a nail brush seems to work, but open to suggestions there. Expect you could try Burning it off, by having grill on full and opening all the windows to let out the smoke!
