Toilet woes (en suite)

Mumtumtastic · 02/08/2025 17:54

I am so sorry if this is tmi(!) but I hate the toilet smells in our en suite! Namely the poo smells 🙈

My DC and I both prefer using it to the family bathroom as we have small DC and have a toddler seat set up in there and they are in and out using it etc so we predominantly use the one in our en suite.

Does anyone have a good solution for masking the smells and making their en suite/ loo actually smell nice??

I have tried different things and nothing seems to work for long, bought reed diffusers and at the start is good but it’s not long before the scent disappears or is undetectable (I don’t get it!) tried room sprays etc.

I don’t want to waste more money, so thought would ask on here in case anyone has found a good - and long lasting - solution

Open the window and close the door.
Leave window open.
Air "freshening " products just make it smell worse imo.

Check whether the extractor fan is working.

Use the extractor.

If it’s not great, change it. You get ones with a motion sensor that switch themselves on and off.

BeGoneHayfever · 02/08/2025 18:26

I would check your extractor fan. Dp’s poos are utterly awful and with the door closed and the fan on, the smell doesn’t come out (and there’s no window in our en suite).

BeGoneHayfever · 02/08/2025 18:26

Sorry I see @ScaryM0nstersaid the same :)

Mumtumtastic · 02/08/2025 18:41

Thanks for your replies! There is no window unfortunately (wish there was 😅)

The extractor fan is working (replaced a few months ago) and we leave the light on to keep it running to maximise the ventilation throughout the day.

But the poo smells still prevail unfortunately! 😭

Do you have an extractor?
If so, is it always used and does the timer allow it to run on for 10-minutes or so?
Does it function correctly (i.e. is it actually extracting)?

Is there a window?
If so open the trickle vents (if fitted) and leave the window in the vent position.

Nourishinghandcream · 02/08/2025 18:44

Cross post with your reply.

Ref my earlier post regarding the extractor, is the timer set sufficiently long (no need to leave the light on)?
Is it actually extracting?

Mumtumtastic · 02/08/2025 18:52

It’s not a bad timer (I think about 10-15 mins?) but we just leave the light on keep it venting. I’m not keen on the electricity waste but is a small room so really needs to vent. I will check if a long timer setting is possible though.

Yeah it’s a good extractor , we invested in a good quality one as it needs to vent the shower cubicle steam too

I’ve heard of those toilet additives, I think there’s one called ‘before you go’ or something(?) but don’t know anyone who uses them and putting extra chemicals (in addition to cleaning chems) down the loo doesn’t sound v environmentally friendly

OP posts:
Mumtumtastic · 02/08/2025 18:58

The extractor is positioned above the shower cubicle and the loo is at the opposite end of the room by the door. So the distance from the extractor maybe makes the smells hang around longer

Is there a flow path for the extractor to actually pull air through? They don’t work well for odour if there isn’t a window cracked.

CalzoneOnLegs · 02/08/2025 19:15

Open the door of the ES shut the door of the bedroom and open the windows wide in the bedroom, you need some fresh air in there

Mumtumtastic · 02/08/2025 19:45

It is really hard to get much in the way of fresh air in there, the en suite is furthest away from bedroom windows, basically right by the bedroom doorway. We keep our small top windows open (even in winter) but cannot leave the main large windows open due to having young DC and it being a bungalow (our bedroom faces out onto the street)

Fresh air is definitely best and we used to leave windows open in our previous house, but it just doesn’t work here and the extractor is not good at clearing odours 😕

Aesop post poo drops. Expensive but lovely smell and bottle lasts a long time.

22O725 · 02/08/2025 20:16

Honestly, I would stop pooing in it. We managed a family of 5 on one bathroom from toddler to teens/adults, I’m sure you can adjust to using the main bathroom for pooping

Retireornot · 02/08/2025 20:29

Eau de Loo by Purdy and Figg. Can’t do without it. A few drops down the loo does the trick.

DongDingBell · 02/08/2025 20:29

What happens if you set up the toddler seat on a different loo, so less people are using the ensuite....

DisplayPurposesOnly · 02/08/2025 20:39

Light a match

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/08/2025 20:42

@ScaryM0nster

'....with a motion sensor...'

🤣🤣🤣

user1476613140 · 02/08/2025 20:43

We are installing a wet room soon, opposite end from the bedroom down the hallway. No way would I want an ensuite in the bedroom!!
DH stinks the place out!🤢

BellissimoGecko · 02/08/2025 20:52

No window!!😱😱😱 he should poo in a loo where there is a window. Much better than fake smells of diffusers etc.

SwanFlight · 02/08/2025 20:56

Bathrooms can stink, sinks can get pretty minging. Could it be that? Pour some boiling water down the sink every fortnight or weekly. Sometimes is just bad luck if you get a reverse draft. In our house I'm used to throwing the front door open for 5 minutes to get a proper breeze through. Fan of an outhouse for this reason, I can't even stand having the toilet in the bathroom.

typicaltuesdaynight · 02/08/2025 21:10

I’m make toilet bombs having 3 males in my house! It was a YouTube video how to make them. It’s baking soda and citric acid and a few drops essential oil. I’m like you and can’t stand it especially seeing my side of the bed is closest to the en suite door!

Hoppinggreen · 02/08/2025 21:17

No way would I be pooing (or allowing DH to) somewhere with no windows.
Plus we have a no poo in the ensuite rule
