Query about Rangemaster cookers/splashbacks/cooker hoods... bit of a long shot!

This is a very specific problem but I thought I'd ask MN anyway

I have an 1100mm Rangemaster and an 1100mm black enamel splashback. I'm going to get one of their black chimney cooker hoods to match - but am having problems with the size of it and wondering what would look best. You can get 900mm or 1200mm hoods. The cooker is tight up against one wall and cannot be moved, so if I were to get the 1200 hood it wouldn't be central over the cooker but would have to stick out to the left by 100ml so quite asymmetrical (I'm quite anal about things being symmetrical!) If I were to get the 900 hood, that would fit nicely central over the oven - but because it's smaller than the splashback it would leave a bit of splashback sticking out at either side and I think that would look really odd. The hood being narrower than the oven isn't a problem, it's the hood being narrower than the splashback which I think might be weird.

I'm not sure if I've made sense here! Basically, has anybody got a narrower hood than splashback?!

do you think it would look weird? not sure myself as lots of hoods these days have glass as well as metal and these don't give the impression of being the same width as the splashback even tho they might be..on a/c of the glass being see-thru.
Recently I read about tapered spashbacks (google cause I can't recall where)which matched a smaller stove and wider hood so obviously some people get around it like that..might come at a price tho.

The hood I am getting is all black, no glass, and looks like an extension of the cooker. See here for a pic of how they all fit together:

we've got a tiled splashback then a "pelmet" (or some horrid word) that connects the two wall-mounted cupboards either side of the cooker, and the hood is mounted into that.

did that make any sense?

yes it is narrower but the splashback doesn't match anyway so it doesn't look odd, is what i think i'm trying to say

lulu25 · 28/05/2008 16:17

so in your picture there is a bit of wood joining the two cupboards so you can't see the edge of the hood.

No, our hood is the same width as the splashback and the cooker. Is rangemaster 90.
But if I were you I would go for the narrower hood, because at least then it could be symmetrical rather than off centre. Looking at mine, I don't think that 10cm or so on either side would look too strange - would be one of those things that initially might grate with you, but would soonish be invisible IYSWIM.

OK asked my DH (kitchen designer) - he's done plenty of rangemasters/splashback/hoods in a similar situation to yours and says go for the 900mm - it will look fine, he assures you!

(He thinks the 1200mm offset would look 'very strange indeed')

Spanglemaker, fantastic, I knew I could rely on MN! Or MNers DHs in this case Thankyou so so much, and please thank him for me too!
Thanks very much to everybody else too, much appreciated!

Off to order a cooker hood! It's been going on for about 2 years but I will have a finished kitchen by the time I'm 50, I will

we have an 80 range and hood but a 90 splashback and looks fine.

sorry - just re-read your first post and it's not the splashback thats the trouble - sorry!
