Is hanging washing on the line not a thing anymore?

Interesting conversation with neighbour recently:

Him: ‘I see you like hanging your washing out to dry.’
Me: ‘Er, yeah. Doesn’t everyone?’
Him: ‘Well no, we think it’s a bit common.’

Now this was said tongue in cheek but I’ve come to realise that NONE of my neighbours have washing lines (only us!) and we all have big enough gardens. Plus a local friend recently said that they tumble dry everything because they can’t stand seeing washing hanging around.

Is this no longer a thing? Has the world gone mad?? I live on top of a very windy hill in a sunny part of the UK - unless it’s raining washing usually dries in a couple of hours. I’m baffled as to why people wouldn’t take advantage of that!

Aldi from time to time has great pegs. I bought 6 packets 4-5 years ago and still going strong. The problem with Aldi is it can take years before the same item is being sold again.

Yes true about Aldi. I’ll definitely keep an eye out for them though. Thanks for that.

Great. Thanks a lot. Picture isn’t showing yet but maybe waiting approval so will check back!

Trying again!

Rosalind1971 · 02/08/2025 14:34

People must be loaded if they use a tumble dryer instead of the line , I go looking for more stuff to wash when weather permits

Which play is that?

I wouldn’t call it national snobbery BTW, more like national prudery. Heaven forfend that anyone should glimpse our unmentionables!

It is "Arms and the man".

Left my towels out for nearly a week once as it kept raining on and off, couldn’t be arsed getting them in and then it would rain again 😂. Smelt lovely

Molkomad · 02/08/2025 14:47

I (and most of my neighbours!) hang the washing outside - I love the smell. I have a tumble dryer and I hate using it - waste of energy, shrinks everything and doesn't smell all that fresh when it's dry. I use a clothes horse over Winter when drying inside. Your neighbours sound very odd!

We don’t hang anything in the house as we’ve had damp issues and have always been told it’s a really bad idea. Even wet towels on radiators can cause issues.

We've never had any issues. We keep a couple of windows cracked and the heating is on in the winter. I've been doing it for decades!

RaraRachael · 02/08/2025 15:01

Just fetched mine in from the communal washing lines. All nicely dried by the sea air. Had a nice chat with other neighbours doing the same. It's like a social event here 😅

12DaisiesTwit · 02/08/2025 15:05

Not all clothes can be tumble dried. I'd be stuck looking like an old fashioned laundry (far more common having stuff all over the radiators imo) if I couldn't hang stuff out!

Startyabastard · 02/08/2025 15:06

I do it and I've been brought up to.
It smells fresher and the sheets and towels are crisper which is something I like.
We have a tumble drier but I rarely use it, so when the weather is crap I sometimes use that, but I don't for many items that would be damaged by it.
I dry clothes on the radiators otherwise, which would appall my overbearing mother who would wait until the sun is out to do a wash.

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 02/08/2025 15:10

There is little that brings me more joy than pegging out. I have two long lines under my carport so it doesn’t even matter if it rains! I have a pleading system of smalls together and gradually increasing in size to big things. Sheets and towels are the ultimate! Why would anyone waste money and energy on a tumble dryer when the wind dries laundry for free?

Wannabedisneyprincess · 02/08/2025 15:29

I’ve just put my 3rd load of the day on the washing line, mainly because it’s likely going to rain here tomorrow and as it’s school holidays I’m in the office full time, during term time I WFH twice as week and wash on those days but in the holidays we have all left the house just after 7:30 so making the most of a sunny Saturday to catch up

milkandhoney2 · 02/08/2025 15:37

I use an airer, not allowed to hang outside in my garden
if it’s very sunny sometimes I’ll put my airer in my neighbours garden (they have a house not an apartment so no rules)

Driftingawaynow · 02/08/2025 15:49

Shitting hell OP, next you’ll be telling us you drink your brew not from a china cup and saucer

HippoStraw · 02/08/2025 16:06

We’re out of the house from 6.30 to 6pm each day, so we tumble dry often. It’s not difficult to understand.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 02/08/2025 16:43

I hang mine out, love the smell. Only thing I use the tumbler for is towels and pants/socks when the weather is bad.

not loaded. I choose to spend my money to minimise my allergies.

most of mine can and mostly natural fibres.

I read about this somewhere. Apparently in some communities it’s banned lol 😂 you know like those posh gated communities. I live in the north east in a market town and everyone I know hangs their washing out. It’s part of our culture I think. When it’s a sunny windy day all the women at work chat excitedly about how much washing they will be able to get done. I was shocked when I read that not everyone is like this. Apparently some neighbours don’t like seeing your washing - especially not your smalls!

Edited

Banned where I live
its a ridiculous rule as I have a garden but because I’m an apartment it’s banned. I also can’t bang a rug outside or do anything immoral, the windows have to be cleaned inside every 4 weeks and the place decorated in approved colours every 7 years

needless to say I ignore 99% of this but the washing gets reported by my neighbour so…

Iclyn · 02/08/2025 18:10

I've currently got all the winter hats , scarves , gloves and crocheted blankets out on my line since about 11 this morning .

JungAtHeart · 02/08/2025 18:11

I bought a fancy ass dryer lately. I put three towels in it to dry the other day … one hour and twenty minutes later they were still damp!!! 🤷🏼‍♀️
