Dog owners help me please!

I currently have the house on the market and really need it to sell. I am also the proud owner of two hairy dogs. They are out to the woods daily and I cannot be constantly bathing them as that’s not good for them. But I think my house might smell 😭.

Before each viewing I give the place a really good clean, use cif and other nice smelling cleaners, open the window and febreeze the upholstery. Recently deep cleaned the rugs. But I then feel like there’s an overpowering smell of chemical cleaners mixed with dog.

if you have hairy dogs and a nice smelling home please tell me your secret as I want it to smell fresh and clean but it just seems unreachable at the moment!

Open windows whenever you are home, put throws on everything and change them very frequently, get carpets cleaned. Wash dog bedding etc or even take it out the house for viewings. Good luck!

I recently sold mine and have a stinky Newfoundland and puppy who scratched the doors (victorian originals) before and after the photos), handyman is on speed dial 🙈
re doggy smells, may eternal saviour have been washable rugs. Ruggable (expensive) mixed with Dunelm. I have loads of them and every few days they are rotated. All flooring is slate or wooden so can smell fresh easily.
I blitzed it before the first lot of viewings and the doors were left open as it was very warm, BUT, I got the estate agent to do the viewings while I took the dogs out. I live alone and didn’t want them barking at every visitor-great that they protect me ordinarily, but a bit shit when you want to sell your home.
I sold within an hour of the first block viewing. Cleaning/dog/other smells (bar death!) would never put me off personally, as many people would make the effort if still living there, and I can generally see through all that if I really like the property. Good luck OP.

Invest in a vax carpet washer. I do the carpets once a month. Like other suggestions, throws that are washed frequently. Pull out furniture, Fur gathers everywhere. Get curtains etc washed. Windows owned as much as possible with a through draft.

Avoid chemical air fresheners like febreeze. Instead use an aromatherapy diffuser such as Neom or boil lemons in water on your cooker hob to fill the house with a natural, clean scent. As others said, clean carpets, curtains and soft furnishings frequently.

Thank you! I have bought some essential oils for a diffuser and they’re already making it smell better. Windows are open and I’m about to pull furniture out to Hoover and mop behind. I also cleaned the inside of the hoover out so hoping it will smell fresh later on for the next viewing!

I wouldn’t be put off by smells or mess or decoration, but I know others are - especially when spending so much money on a house!

thanks for the good luck 🤞🏻 I really need the house to sell (although very sad because I love my house) because we’re separating and it’s a nightmare living in the same home ☹️

A doggy smell would not put me off a house, the smell of Cif and Fabreeze definitely would.

When I had a hairy dog a few years ago it was always his bedding that smelled bad so I washed it all regularly

Yes this was my fear! I’ve been cleaning and trying to cover the smell but then felt embarrassed that it stinks of spray! Smells fresher today 🤭

Best of luck with the sale 👍

Please be careful with diffusers/candles and home fragrance products around dogs. Very few are actually pet safe and should never be set off in an enclosed environment (i.e. one not properly ventilated) when you own pets and even then only sparingly.

You're better off as a PP said having a pot on the stove that you put lemons/oranges, maybe star anise or cinnamon etc. in.
