🏡
Just that. What gives you that homely feeling as you walk in the door?

Dust, piles of dishes, that bloody blind that’s on the wonk again? 😆

When I’m in a holiday house the things that I miss because while they may be lovely are never ‘a home’ are - houseplants, the table in just the right place near where I sit for all my gubbins, pictures of people I know but don’t see enough/any more, drawings the neighbour kid dropped round on the fridge door, stuff that goes together but doesn’t match because it’s been bought over the years rather than bought all at once from the same place.

Houseplants.

NotrialNodeal · 29/07/2025 17:58

Personal items (no not THOSE kind of personal items Grin ). Things that show off your personality and individuality. Things that say to people this is your house and not a characterless show home you've just moved into.

Nannyfannybanny · 29/07/2025 18:22

Animals, books, plants, pictures.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/07/2025 18:24

A smell. I can't describe it but it's a combination of woodsmoke, flowers, a bit of dust and damp dog, furniture polish and lemon. As soon as I smell that I feel at home (even though my own home is heavier on the wet dog and dust than the nicer elements).

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 29/07/2025 18:26

Natural light always makes a place feel more homely than somewhere dark.
Houseplants or fresh flowers.
Clean but not sterile.

NovemberMorn · 29/07/2025 18:28

People make a house a home.
Added extras, photo's, flowers, plants, just nice things that have been collected over time, they don't have to be expensive, just stuff you (and your family) like.

GCAcademic · 29/07/2025 18:28

A dog.

HerdMentality · 29/07/2025 18:29

Things that have been gathered and tell a story about the people living there.

humblebea · 29/07/2025 18:30

The warm welcome you get when you walk in. Where you feel like you can drop all your troubles at the door and relax. It’s not stuff it’s the people and pets. It’s the years of memories. Making a home a nice house is more about real plants, mirrors and paintings and the smell of fresh coffee.

Vitrolinsanity · 29/07/2025 18:31

My nieces always say the smell. They buy candles and oils I have for their own houses.

My son says washing powder and dinner. He sniffs the air like a beagle as soon as he gets in, or food is being made.

All of the children’s friends say it because they feel like they’re welcome.

I think it’s animals and fresh air from my windows being thrown open rain or shine.

LadyLolaRuben · 29/07/2025 19:21

Pets, soft furnishings - nice cushions, curtains and throws. cut flowers. Fresh smell. Not cluttered or bare.

DinoLil · 29/07/2025 19:24

A dog.

Spidey66 · 29/07/2025 19:41

My dog, though that’s not a Mumsnetty response!

K0OLA1D · 29/07/2025 19:43

Colour, books, pictures and things.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/07/2025 19:46

Dogs, piles of them. So happy to be loved by them.

Cynic17 · 29/07/2025 19:48

Books, pictures, a bit of dust, things not being perfect. If it looks like immaculate, or like a showhome, then it's not an actual home.
