Can this disgusting washing machine be saved?

Just bought my first house and agreed to buy white goods from the seller. Fridge and freezer were easy enough to clean but unfortunately the washer is disgusting.

Is it savable? I've got so much going on I can't really be taking time off work to await a delivery and I don't think I could get a washing machine in my little car

I've bought Lidl washing machine cleaner and want to clean the seals etc before I do it.

It's a John Lewis JLWM1413 if anyone is familiar

Oh and she wanted £200 for this before I haggled her down and then haggled further when I found out she got it second hand herself!

Of course it is. Just clean it and it'll be fine.

Lots of good tutorials on YouTube, totally salvageable, just a bit of elbow grease.

Clean the filters. Then for the machine wash the soft bits wish washing up liquid. Run a hot wash with a bottle of cheap vinegar in and a cold wash with a big slug of bleach.

Thanks, got the detergent drawer insert clean with cream cleaner, bleach spray and a scourer and toothbrush. Next up seal and filter

Thank you! Will try washing up liquid on the seal, I was worried about degrading the rubber if I used anything too harsh

Not sure on the model but John Lewis brand machines are excellent so it will be worth the effort.

Mine has done 2 house moves, is at least 10 years old and never had an issues with it. My mum has had a slightly better model for easily 15 years, if not closer to 20.

You can get realllly good black mould remover for the rubber seals - comes in a tube and you just leave it on for a while. Blew my mind the first time I used it. Got some off Amazon

That's good to know, thanks! I've not turned it on yet but if it does me a year or two I'll be happy

Fantastic, thanks for the tip! I'll have a look for it if the washing machine cleaner and washing up liquid don't do it. The cleaner says I can put some on a cloth and use it on the seals

As PPs - yes it’s just dirt and could prove to be a bargain once cleaned. Not sure if Lidl cleaner is up to the job though but HG cleaning products (can get off Amazon) are excellent, that might be the mould cleaner PP mentioned, but their washing machine cleaner is also great, get a descaler too if it’s not included in the cleaner.
PA don’t forget to clean the filter

Was she actually washing her clothes in that recently?? Agree with everyone else’s cleaning tips, then put it on the hottest longest cycle. Usually 90 degrees

FiveCustardTarts · 20/07/2025 11:28

A few places deliver at weekends, just in case you do need a new one. AO definitely does, think Curry’s do as well?

It's about fifty quid to get somebody in to change the seal if it does tear - it can be an absolute pig of a job to do on some models, so don't bother trying to do it yourself. Which is a lot cheaper than buying a new machine.

I know right? The entire place has been filthy. The water that came out of the bottom drain / by the filter STANK

Don't use liquid detergent and never, ever touch ultra concentrated fabric conditioner or scent booster things - they're what feed the mould and stench.

Powder detergent is the best thing to use.
