Yellow Sunscreen stains on white T Shirts and coffee stains in white mugs - what really works?

Good morning all. I know i can Google this but so many suggestions don't work! Thought it would be much better to ask real people.
I think I have all the cleaning products and natural products but not found the right solution for my white t shirts.

My coffee cups are used daily and it's always a struggle to get rid of the brown stains. Not really want to use bleach every time I wash up.

Any tips gratefully received!

Sunscreen is an absolute beast. I have a holiday let and it’s the bane of my life as it’s usually waterproof and oily. Whatever you do, do not spray bleach on it - it turns bright pink as I learnt to my horror when a duvet cover ended up looking like the Turin Shroud. I have heard that a grease remover works, so might be worth trying something like Elbow Grease all purpose degreaser, which works well on oily stains on the front of tops.

Can’t help you on mugs I’m afraid.

I bleach my whites (the turn pink with the suncream) then I leave them to hang in the sun for a day. They come out good as new.

I find that it works to mix equal parts lemon juice and washing up liquid and rub into sun cream stains, then rinse and wash as normal.

I have read that eucalyptus oil put on neat works for suncream stains.

For stained mugs I use cheap denture tablets.

Mugs I use the bottle sterilising tablets - usually similar to denture tablets.

For mugs I actually do use denture tablets. They do the job brilliantly.

For sun cream stains I soak first in vanish white (or own brand) powder. Then I make up a paste of the vanish powder /washing up liquid /lemon juice, rub it in then wash immediately as normal.

Denture tablets in the cups will get rid of any stains.... just wash really well before using

Just normal elbow grease that comes in the spray bottle, usually yellow but they have some different smelling ones these days. I use it for any sort of food or 'greasy' stain on fabric before chucking it in the machine

Just bleaching mugs doesn’t remove the actual stains. Dentures cleaning tablets in boiling water, left for an hour, then rub with non scratch cleaning pad. Removes stains 100%
Yellowing due to sweat and spf- that’s the the problem I haven’t solved. Several of my tops are ruined. I’ve yet to try vinegar of soda crystals but that’s my next move.

WorriedRelative · 20/07/2025 15:33

Bleaching mugs makes the staining worse as it damages the glaze. Buy a new mug and just use washing up liquid and a gentle pan scrubber suitable for non-stick pans on the stains.

Never bleach crockery

Washing soda crystals if the fabric will take it. Be careful because it will take some of the colour out of clothes.

Astonish do a powder - clean & revive - which works wonders on mugs. Put it in, pour on boiling water and leave for a couple of hours. The stain will be gone!

Azuresky68 · 21/07/2025 20:50

@Jen946 You are a star 🌟 Elbow grease worked! I added soda crystals to my wash as well and found these lurking in the back of my cupboard..the whitest whites ever. Thanks again.

Found some Milton tablets at the back of my cupboard so thanks to everyone for suggesting those too..sparkly cups again. My next question is how to make glass vases sparkle? I tried Elbow Grease on one and it seemed to do the job - will post as a new thread. Thanks again.

Distilled white vinegar for vases. 39p in plastic bottle in Sainsburys or ALDI.

Decant it in a spray bottle. It works on limescale.

A dot of bleach or bit of sterilising tablet will keep the flower water clear. Does the same thing as flower ‘food’. Change the water and recut stems every couple of days.
