Getting oil stains out of flooring

I stupidly used a body oil in spray form inside our lovely Airbnb without thinking (first time using this kind of product so didn’t occur to me) and now I see these marks on the floor, which I’m pretty sure are from me. I feel awful as our host is so kind!

I’m actually not 100% sure what the flooring material is (clay? stone? concrete? It’s quite an old place, continental Europe, but I don’t know what’s been added more recently) and I don’t want to do any more damage - does anyone know how to best proceed? Thank you!

We are very rural and in a country that’s not really served by Amazon, so would need to be something available in local shops… but thank you…

Maybe try a small amount of washing up liquid on a cloth and give a general wipe over!

It’s already dried - definitely helped a bit but hasn’t completely gotten rid of the stains. I’m now pretty sure that it’s clay, though, judging by what the cloth looked like afterwards. Google tells me that it’s ok to use the dish soap a few times on clay so I might try this again and hopefully not dissolve the tiles 😳

Oh fingers crossed
maybe some talc dusted over may absorb too

@lovemycbf thank you, we abandoned the project after dinner and some wine but will have another go at it tomorrow!

Maybe sprinkle with flour ? Worth a try to absorb the oil.

hatboxes · 13/07/2025 18:43

Bicarbonate of soda is good at absorbing oil if you can get hold of that. On a sealed surface I’d sprinkle it on an oil spill and then sweep it up. However i think the issue might be that the clay or whatever is porous, not sealed? So I’d try a small corner first to make sure any powder doesn’t make it worse by lodging itself in tiny holes.

But washing up liquid as pp said is also a good shout. As it’s not a flat surface you may need to scrub with a brush rather than just wipe.

hatboxes · 13/07/2025 18:46

Also, try hot hot water with the washing up liquid.

@hatboxes thank you - the dish soap a few times ended up working but noted for next time I use my body oil spray 🤣
