Washer a bit smelly

I noticed today and yesterday when I got the washing out the machine it smelt a bit funny. Not the clothes but the machine. Could this be due to the heat we are having as the machine is only 6 months old.

I have just put it on a tub clean to see if this helps.

any tips?

Chuck a dishwasher tablet in and run on a hot wash- you'll be amazed how mucky it is.
Also...if you use pods or liquid then change to powder. Liquid leaves a residue on the drum- a bit like shower gel does on shower screens- which will smell. A washing machine engineer told us this- he was right!

Great, thank you. I only use biological powder.

I’ll give the dishwasher tablet a go. Thanks

Wipe not only around the door seal but inside the smaller gap between seal and machine. Bet you will be shocked..
And a 90 wash once a week...

I used the Dettol washing machine cleaner. You just put it in the drawer and put your machine on a 60° wash with nothing in the machine and it smells gorgeous afterwards. I get it in Tesco, it's £3 a bottle

Thanks both. I’ll look for the Dettol cleaner and I do normally only wipe the main part of the seal not the in between bit. I’ll do that once the tub clean finishes. Hopefully not to gross.

Have you drained it using the hose the bottom, and removed the filter and given it a good scrub? Stagnant water can pool in there. Have towels down on the floor before you start.

Oh interesting! Do you put the powder in the drum or drawer?

Once a month or so we throw 2 dishwasher tablets in with some disinfectant and vinegar and run a 90 degree wash. The machine never gets smelly since we started doing this!

In the drawer.

bloodredfeaturewall · 23/06/2025 12:45

do you leave door and drawer open when not in use?

SleepingisanArt · 23/06/2025 12:51

A washing machine engineer told me a long time ago that once a month you should run an empty wash using biological powder on the hottest setting the machine has. Then wipe the seal, gap between drum and seal and leave the door and powder drawer ajar. Never had a problem with smells, gunk or mould. New machine tells you to run the empty wash after a certain number of washes if you only wash at 30 and 40° as it needs at least 60 to clear residue

Evermore7 · 23/06/2025 16:05

Thanks for all the tips. I’ve run a drum clean wash and wiped the gap between the drum and seal and it’s smelling fine again now.

Will make sure I wipe that part out in future.

If you use liquid or washing tablets this will be the reason it smells
use powder as it contains enzymes that liquid doesn’t.
using soda crystals alongside the powder helps it too and a hot wash once a month with just soda crystals will keep it clean

We had to drain our old machine - there was a lot of water coming out of the
drain hose . Difficult to find something to catch it as a shallow tray didn't work . Ended up using a small long necked bottle and twisting the on/off valve to shut it down to empty the bottle .
I used absorbant re useable bed pads ( I use to defrost the fridge/freezer )

The smell from the WM drain was unholy , even with monthly cleaning washes . Inside the drum was fine though !
