Fly screen suggestions for uPVC windows?

KateShugakIsALegend · 17/06/2025 20:04

Has anyone got any recommendations?

I want to have my windows open at night without inviting in mozzies and moths

Following! Bloody sick of flies.

We've just been measured up for some after looking for years. Can let you know how we get on but obv can't recommend at the moment. (quite expensive)

We have an indoor cat and bought these window meshes, which have the added benefit of stopping flies etc from being able to get in.
We’ve had these on our windows for several years now and they are sturdy and have held up really well. The man who makes them was super helpful with our measuring queries etc when we ordered.

Thank you so much!

So you stick velcro onto your internal window frames, then attach / detach the mesh as needed?

Does the velcro look ok? Have you ever tried unsticking it?

Removable Velcro Fly Screens are perfect on uPVC windows because the velcro sticks to the windowframe and the fly screen then sticks to the tape.

I looked at these, but couldn't see a close up of the frame detail. Do you have them?

@KateShugakIsALegendyou can get two different types on the cat website. One is the stick on Velcro, which we have, and the other are sturdier frames that can go on window sills. My mum has these and they’re really good too.
I’m not sure you’d be able to remove the Velcro strips very easily, to be honest, ours are pretty stuck on.

@GooseOnMyGrave Really helpful, thank you so much!

I will investigate :)

Be really careful with the velcro strips. They've made a right mess of my window frames. I peeled them off recently and they've left a gooey yellow strip that absolutely will not come off. I've tried everything and nothing works. The only solution is to put another strip over to disguise it.

Thanks - this is what I was worried about

Oh no! I was just coming on here to sing the praises of the velcro strips! Still, worth it for me - my teen dd was absolutely refusing to air her room for fear of bugs, and her room was getting mouldy. The net and velcro strips has been a wonderful solution.

It is brilliant for sure and I wouldn't be without my net screens but the velcro really has made a right mess. It's well known about and there's multiple posts on various sites with people with the same problem. Perhaps look at magnets instead op.

@Foolsgold74 have you tried wiping down the glue residue with some baby oil? It should remove it.

I haven't, no but it really is attached as hard as concrete, so I don't hold out much hope.

I had to clean some off my dds window and used a combination of wd40, elbow grease spray and a scraper. It still took a while but I got most of it off

Tried wd40 and a scraper and it still didn't budge.

@DrBridgerton I'm just waiting for them to arrive but I'm away for a couple of weeks. Will update when fitted.

We've got uPVC windows too and didn't want to stick anything directly on the frames after hearing horror stories about the velcro leaving residue. I looked around quite a bit and found Premier Environmental, they do proper framed fly screens that don't need glue or tape.

They're not the cheapest option, but for something that actually fits well and doesn't wreck your windows, it made sense long-term. They look pretty tidy once in place too, not flimsy or obvious like some of the mesh kits. If you're after something better than velcro or magnetic ones, worth a look.

I agree. But they are actually really easy and cheap to make yourself if you have a sewing machine and works out about a tenth of the price.

May I ask how you did it? Did you still use stick on velcro for the window?

My problem is that I have PVC frames which have been painted and I suspect the velcro will just peel the paint off when removed.

Yes I used stick on velcro for the window. There is a specialist velcro supplier which lets you buy just one side - so I bought a few meters of stick on rough side and a few meters of sew on smooth side.

I also had velux Windows which don't have the plastic frame. So I went to a local window supplier and bought a few lengths of narrowish uPVC strips and got my builder to secure them to the wall around the outside of the window, so I had something to stick it to.
