Damaged kitchen sink

I have a little balloon type device that you part fill with limescale remover and slip over the end of your tap to remove limescale that has built up around the end. Doing this a couple of days ago on my kitchen tap and obviously overfilled it as it slipped off and some limescale remover puddled in the stainless steel sink. The sink is now dreadfully marked and nothing will shift it. I suspect I may have taken the surface off and damaged it irreparably. It never occurred to me that the remover would do this and it looks dreadful, like the sink is dirty. Is there any way I can rectify this or does it mean a new sink?

Fur future reference you can just use white vinegar to remove limescale from taps and it doesn’t damage sinks. I just soak kitchen towel in it and wrap it round. You can put cling film over the top if you want and that helps keep it on (can also use elastic bands if needed). Works really well and super cheap and won’t damage anything.

Not sure about the stainless steel sink. Do they have coatings? I know stainless steel appliances can do to repel fingerprints but wouldn’t have thought that’d be on a sink. Have you tried a bit of barkeepers friend on it? Scrub in direction of grain.

I wonder though if something in the cleaner has reacted with the metal?

Descaler can stain stainless steel. I left a fork in the stuff and the fork was dark and dull afterwards. I'm not the sort to throw anything away, so I imagine the fork must have recovered.
