Getting red dye out of a white shirt

soupyspoon · 12/06/2025 18:17

I have a really nice white cotton shirt that I bought from a cheap shop Tenezis or something like that. But the fit is perfect, the length, the arm length etc. I was never able to find anything that fits just right and I wear it a lot. I bought it in Italy but on their UK website I cant see it and I bought it about 18 months ago anyway

Recently I was wearing new fabric (faux sueded) maroon gloves with the shirt and the dye from the gloves has gone all round the cuffs and theres a stain on the front where its visible as well. Not sure how that stain got there from the gloves but its the same colour

I have tried rinsing in cold water and plain soap, not made any difference what so ever
I have had it bleaching in the sun in the conservatory for a few days now, again no difference. Marks are still there

I know if I just put it in the wash it could set the stain, is there any chance of me getting this out?

Try a stain remover or look online for removing transfer dye from white clothes.

Allseeingallknowing · 12/06/2025 18:36

Napisan , soda crystals or mild bleach might do it

Foolsgold74 · 13/06/2025 11:06

If all is lost anyway, I'd use toilet bleach on it. It might turn it pink or yellow but then rinse it out well and hang it in direct sunshine.

Don't use bleach. A colour-run type product or stain remover should be fine.

Im coming back to this thread because I need to tackle the shirt, its been sitting there waiting for me to do something with it

I have some colour run stuff, but its a whole pouch, do I put it in a wash with the shirt and other white things (I have some bedding etc) or do I soak the shirt in the colour run and if so do I use all of it?

Which product is it? How big is the pouch?
Has the dye run into the bedding?

YouOKHun · 23/06/2025 12:04

I’ve just got red dye out of the collar of a white cotton shirt. The dye had rubbed off from a red jacket. I dampened the shirt and sprinkled a thick layer of Vanish powder directly onto the stain and let it soak up the moisture (the stuff that comes in the pink drum container). I left it to soak for an hour and then washed the shirt at 40 degrees. The dye has gone completely.

I have a very old box of Dr Beckmann and then also a pouch of Dylon

Only the shirt I have is stained and its only a slight tinge on the edges of the cuffs and a blob on the front near the buttons.

None of the other white cottons I want to wash are stained, I just thought it might be useful to do it with other things in the wash at the same time

I'd use the old stuff first.

So Im back to this bloody shirt again, its been sitting there staring at me but Ive been too frightened to touch it in case I do something wrong

So I thought I would start low tech with a vanish stain bar, scrubbed away at the blob on the front, no change whatsoever. Scrubbed at the cuffs and thought I saw a tiny bit of reduction but still with a pinkish tinge.

So now its in a bowl of bicarb water, I scrubbed at the pink blob on the front with the bicarb as a paste, again, not one jot of differnence except that my hands are stinging.

How long should I leave it in the bowl, can I damage it by leaving it too long?

@soupyspoon , rinse it in the morning and bung it in the washing machine with some stain remover and line dry it.

(Be careful with the Vanish stuff, as it can be unpredictable on clothes that aren't all white.)

soupyspoon · 02/07/2025 22:46

So in the bowl all night?

And then in the washing machine on its own, just the shirt with the stain remover? Its quite small the shirt on its own, is it ok to wash it just on its own with a pack of stain remover?

All this angst over quite a cheap shirt but the fit is just perfect and I love it, it was about 20 quid in Italy and although the brand does sell stuff online in the UK this was a couple of years ago so they havent got the same shirt. I wont find the same thing again.

Try the Ace for whites spray. It smells bleachy so might work

soupyspoon · 03/07/2025 07:19

Well Ive just taken it out of the bowl, red blob still there, not changed a bit. I had a paste of bicarb on it all night as well as the rest of it soaking in the bowl

now its being rinsed in the machine, then I will put it on the wash with the colour catching thing.

I dont think theres any hope for it

Shirt update

Arrived home. This morning I rinsed the shirt as advised. Put on a wash with the colour catcher stuff. Hung up to dry

Red blob still there.

Cannot believe this.

The cuffs are slightly less pinky/reddy and may not show although I can still detect it

My next stop is the bleach spray, got to go for the big guns now.

I always use Vanish stain remover bar. Wet the clothing in cold water, rub liberally with the Vanish bar and leave for 24 hours. It’s never let me down yet.

Utterlyconfusednow · 03/07/2025 18:11

Whatever you do don’t use any hot water until after it’s sorted.

soupyspoon · 03/07/2025 18:15

Well I did all the cold water stuff already, didnt shift it a jot. The wash this morning was a 40 degree

I meant before the dye had been removed. Hot water can seal it in. Try the Vanish soap bar, it’s worked every time for me. Nothing to lose.

I used that the other day, didnt shift it although it slightly lessened the pinky cuffs
