Uncomfortable Bed in Guest bedroom

We bought a bed over a year ago for our guest bedroom. I felt the mattress was too hard when trying at the store, I prefer soft-medium and this one was advertised as medium (I’m guessing a little more on the firm side).

My DH convinced me to buy, as it is a good mattress and he prefers firmer. Our guest which stays most often has said it is quite uncomfortable and too firm (I was hoping it would soften).

I personally can’t sleep in it. Would you sell and buy a softer one, or just expect guests to put up with it- as it is only for a few nights maximum? I feel awful providing something uncomfortable and it was not a cheap mattress!

Who is your guest? I can't imagine complaining to my host that the bed was uncomfortable.
You can always make a hard mattress softer with a topper or even duvets but you can't make a soft mattress harder.

I wouldn’t complain if I were a guest but the effect of a hard mattress on my mobility the next morning would be impossible to disguise. Honestly if asked back I’d book into a hotel and hope it didn’t cause offence.

I use medium firm as the compromise option on guest beds and keep a couple of toppers handy for anyone who needs them. I want my guests to be comfortable and get a decent night’s sleep.

Our spare bed mattress was too firm so I bought a two inch thick memory foam topper. No complaints since.

That's interesting. When we moved ten years ago, I had to replace iur bed quickly and bought a cheap bed from JL because it was ready to be delivered. The mattress is extra firm. I expected to demote it quickly to the guest room but DH and I found it marvellous.

I have two bulging discs at L3 L4, at L1 and T12 I have fully wedged the vertebrae due to osteoporosis. An extra firm mattress has revolutionised the reduction in back pain. If I sleep on a soft or dodgy bed I am in pain for up to a fortnight.

Backs are such tricky buggers.

I have used a mattress topper on my too firm mattress, plus a couple of duvets underneath that were spare. You’ll have to buy deeper fitted sheets though.

Mattress comfort gets more important the older you get - you’ll have the best of both worlds, add the topper et al when a guest wants soft, leave it off when they prefer/need a firm mattress.
