How to clean suckers on bathmat?

The plastic kind that goes inside the bath to stop you slipping?

I've just spent 20 mins scrubbing the 200 suckers on tje underneath of my bathmat with a bleachy bathroom cleaner & an old toothbrush to get rid of the orange mould that was starting to grow.

There must be an easier way?

I've tried the dishwasher but there was no result - it couldn't seem to get into the nooks under the suckers.

The bathmat is always lifted after every bath and hung upside down to air and the bathroom windows are open, so I don't think I can do much more on rhe prevention side.

How do you clean yours?

I hang mine to dry after each shower, and then put them in the washing machine every second weekend on low.

Have you tried soaking it in bleach and water in the bath?

My parents house has very hard water and they are always buying new bath mats because cleaning/drying them does nothing, could it be the same for you?

Use the vanish power that you use for a white wash and soak it in a tub of hot water with a couple of scoops of the stain powder. It gets everything off.

FancyCatSlave · 20/05/2025 16:45

I do a combo of washing machine now and again and a regular spray with HG mould spray. That seems to do the trick.

I also changed to a mat with fewer, larger suckers as much easier to clean!

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 20/05/2025 16:50

DH does ours - lay in bath, suckers up (the mat that is, not DH). 😂 Spray rather thoroughly with bathroom cleaner and leave to soak for a bit. Then use his instrument of choice, which is a kitchen washing-up brush (not the one that belongs in the kitchen, but one kept for this purpose in the bathroom).

I have just consulted with him, and he says that sometimes that isn't enough, so he has to employ a cloth-covered thumbnail for the really tricky bits.

CapitalAtRisk · 20/05/2025 16:54

Just throw it out an get another one. Life's too short.

isitmeamithedrama · 20/05/2025 17:01

I soak it upside down in the bath with a good skoosh of bleach in the water while I clean the rest of the bathroom then blast it with the shower and give it a very quick scrub. Comes up sparkling every time. It’s a “clear” one so discolours quickly. But it seems to work…so far

LoafofSellotape · 20/05/2025 17:03

Put it in the washing machine with some Ariel cold gel wash, gets it all off.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 20/05/2025 17:10

I just put it ‘suckers up’ in the bath and drench it with anti-mould spray. Walk away… come back 20 mins later and rinse.

DonewhatIcando · 20/05/2025 18:30

I'd say if there's orange mold already on there then you're not cleaning it often enough (no offence), it takes a while to build up.
I turn mine upside down and pour bleach on it then sprinkle some water on top and leave it for a while but I clean mine several times a week, I'm no Mrs Hinch btw 😀

Thanks for all the tips.

I'll definitely try the washing machine method to see if that's more effective than the dishwasher was.

If that doesn't work I'll try soaking in some bleach solution to see if that works.

It's the time consuming scrubbing each sucker individually that I hate - we have a long bath and a toddler so I need a long bath mat, whic limits what I can buy.

The orange mould has started to build up in places because it's such a pain in the arse to clean so I always seems to miss some bits - you have to literally fold back and clean each of the 200 suckers (not joking, I counted), all the way around, one by one.

I soak ours overnight in sterilising fluid mix, that seems to do the trick

Bonbon21 · 21/05/2025 08:59

Chuck it in the washing machine with the towels... works just fine!

Renabrook · 21/05/2025 09:03

I wash with towels

Ollybob · 21/05/2025 09:11

A floor brush, the type that is flat and bigger, you can use it to run along several at once, just need to go in at different angles to get it all.
I've got a clear one too so you can see the mould quicker, not decided if it's a good or bad thing yet 😂

justasking111 · 21/05/2025 18:31

My new full length bath mat has arrived. Only two suckers for hanging on the wall tiles.

I wash with towels

This. I was it weekly on a mixed load at 60 degrees. It hasn't disintegrated yet!
