Burned steel pans

Hi everyone
I have made a real mess of some stainless steel pans…
I have moved into a place with a gas cooker after years of induction and I just struggled regulating the heat and they have really gone a funny colour with burned on bits which I can’t shift.
Do I need to write them off? :(

Try rubbing a dishwasher tablet over the stained areas (the hard kind, not the liquitabs). That may shift the discoloured area.

My pans have usually been fine after overheating, but once when a pan boiled dry, the base layer came away from main part of the pan. It never heated very evenly after that, so I disposed of it. It doesn't look as though your pan has separated though, so it should be OK.

Should I moisten the tablet first?

also I don’t have a dishwasher - that may have helped the pans! But I can get a tablet off a friend.
Thank you!

IME you need several tabs - buy a pack of value ones from somewhere. Yes moisten the tab lightly and use one end like a mini scourer. It will help!

Scampuss · 11/05/2025 23:12

Barkeeper's friend and a green scourer should sort it.

Yes, sorry, do moisten the dishwasher tablet first for best results!

Astonish paste and a scouring pad

I third this. Magic stuff

uncomfortablydumb60 · 12/05/2025 00:37

Cif cream would probably work

Okshacky · 12/05/2025 00:53

Scrub Daddy and paste.

CrotchetyQuaver · 12/05/2025 07:31

What you need are Brillo Pads, they will have that looking brand new in no time. They're fine wire wool with some pink stuff in and they're miracle workers that have been around for over 100 years! Should be able to find them in the supermarket.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 12/05/2025 08:03

That will definitely come off. I would fill a sink or something like a washing up bowl or bucket with the hottest water you can and stick in a dishwasher tablet (beg one from a friend or neighbour) and leave it to soak for a couple of hours. Then use Astonish paste or the Pink paste and it should come off without too much elbow grease. I wouldn't use Brillo pads as they will actually scratch the surface.

Another vote for Barkeepers.

Oven Mate overnight, wipe off in the morning. Thank me later.

If none of the above (excellent) suggestions work, my DH rescued one of my pans that had boiled dry for rather a long time with auto metal polish and lots of elbow grease!
