Do you use all the space on your rotary airer?

I have a bog-standard whirligig washing line with 3 arms, and 8 washing line bits in each section. When I hang washing out, I only hang it on every other line, so that there is more space between the washing to help it dry faster. I?ve always done this ? it?s the way my mum does it. Am I needlessly limiting the amount of washing I can hang out?

Surely not if your machine is full each time. I also hang on every other line with a four arm rotary and my machine is usually at capacity.

oliviaelanasmum · 19/05/2008 10:51

I use everyother section too, but i do have a long line which i fill up first as usually have at least 2 or 3 loads a day to dry.

BlueDragonfly · 19/05/2008 10:53

no i don't have enough pegs

if i did i would do as you do and use every other "rung" otherwise things can't blow properly

kalie · 19/05/2008 10:54

Wow that's a lot of washing!

oliviaelanasmum · 19/05/2008 11:11

Im sure my kids put clean washing back into the wash as im always doing it, have 3 loads out on the line now and another in the machine. I have 3 children and one big kid

NomDePlume · 19/05/2008 11:15

I have a 4 arm one. It has a large capacity. I use every other line. I have a large capacity washing machine too.

cornflakegirl · 19/05/2008 13:46

Oh, good - I'm glad it's not just me! I was looking in the Argos catalogue at driers, and they all said they held 3 or 4 average - and I can only fit 1-2 loads on mine. And I wasn't sure if it was random marketing stuff, or if I was actually mad!

Cappuccino · 19/05/2008 14:02

eh?

nervousal · 19/05/2008 14:11

if folk only use every other rung (which I do too) - Why do't the manufacturers just make them further apart?

Iota · 19/05/2008 14:13

I use every line, but put small things like knickers and socks on one row and longer things like trousers on the row next to it

PuppyMonkey · 19/05/2008 14:16

Rotary dryers are rubbish, get yerself a proper line!

tigana · 19/05/2008 14:17

If they put them further apart it would reduc ethe number of metres of space they could 'sell' you. The fact that they are so clsoe together than you can only us ehalf of it is not their concenr once you have bought it.

tigana · 19/05/2008 14:17

I have nothing to attach either end of a normal line too...so am resigned to rotary dizziness for year to come.

PuppyMonkey · 19/05/2008 14:24

Tigana, you have to move house then!!

tigana · 19/05/2008 14:25

Have only just moved here!!
It is worth the dizziness!

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 19/05/2008 14:47

tigana can you cn buy posts as well as line but if like me you've only a small patch of garden you're stuck!!

expatinscotland · 19/05/2008 14:53

i have fantasies about a Brabantia whirly gig.

PuppyMonkey · 19/05/2008 17:02

expat, you need to get out more...

policywonk · 19/05/2008 17:05

I use all the lines (ie I don't leave spaces between the lines of clothes) and my clothes all get perfectly dry. Might take longer though, never tried it the other way.

As with BlueDragonfly, my only limitation is in the peg department.

tigana · 19/05/2008 17:06

Garden is all on terraces. A normal line would take up all a whole terrace. Not willing to lose whole terrace just for drying washing! Would also block view of the remaining terraces, unless it was on top terrace. Rotary will use up maybe 1/3 of a terrace. And can be folded to take up significantly less. It has to be a rotary.
