Nice stuff, serving, vases etc

Yes. If there're cracks, I just display it.

JockyWilsonsaid · 27/04/2025 17:11

If it's only a small chip or two round the edge, yes.

FuzzyPuffling · 27/04/2025 17:12

If I love it and want to use it as a vase, I put a jam jar inside it.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/04/2025 17:12

If it's not too dreadful, yes. I'm chronically clumsy and take chips out of stuff almost as soon as I get it out of the box - I can't afford to throw EVERYTHING away!

EndlesslyDecluttering · 27/04/2025 17:16

Chips yes, cracks maybe, depends whether it is still any use or decorative. So I'd keep a chipped plate but not a cracked one.

Gumbo · 27/04/2025 17:18

This is funny because it's an ongoing joke with my teen DS, as I refuse to throw it out unless it's actually broken. I have a couple of plates with cracks in them...they absolutely WILL break (almost certainly while laden with food) at some point - I only put my own dinner on them, and DS is so fed up that he has said he'll laugh when my food lands on the floor.

So in summary - yes, I keep crockery with chips (and big cracks)!

Not unless it is something with an emotional attachment /significant memory. Everyday plates and mugs? Straight into the bin. I can't stand chipped crockery, it's porous and therefore impossible to clean effectively, and the feel/texture of the chipped bit makes my spidey senses tingle.

Phoebepeeby · 27/04/2025 17:21

Cheap plates etc, nope. Treasured beautiful plates, yes!

Basically depends on if it’s ikea or Dh family set!

AlicePottery · 27/04/2025 17:29

Nope as it makes the piece potentially hazardous (cracks can lead to breaks with hot food/drink getting spilt, cracks can also harbour bacteria). I break most of them up and use them as crocks for the bottom of plant pots, the nicer ones I put in a box for mosaic making.

I currently have a chipped plate a bowl and side plate in my every day china. It’s only Sainsbury’s so if I can find the same line I’ll just replace it. Luckily my wedding china is intact! Mainly because I rarely use it!
I have a nice piece of arty pottery that has a chip but that side is turned to the wall. If something I value broke I’d definitely try and get it fixed.

Sgtmajormummy · 27/04/2025 17:45

The person who chipped the plate gets their food on it forever after. Grin
Anything damaged in my “good” but everyday service gets bought again via eBay or Chinasearch and the damaged one becomes a paperclip holder or spoon rest.
I’ve even made a pincushion/holder out of a chipped espresso cup and saucer. Cute and useful.
