HELP! Musty smell

I painted my bedroom a week ago and had a professional decorator to paint the landing and downstairs (open plan)
I noticed my fur throws, sofa cushions, bedding, fur gillets. jackets and jumpers smelt really vile
I have washed them but the odour is still there - I am literally sniffing everything and I am so repelled with the smell. I am scared I will lose all of my clothes
I read that paint gives off fumes and certain fibres will absorb this vile smell.
I have cleaned my wardrobe with lemon juice/bleach put bowls of baking powder and white vinegar in etc
Anyone else had a similar experience and does the smell eventually go ? Is it a case of keep washing everything

Never experienced this and would be questioning what paint he used.

Meanwhile keep all the windows open as long as possible.

Are you sure the smell isn’t in your sinuses? Have other people sniffed them?

daisychains40 · 15/04/2025 13:32

A friend came round and confirmed things smelt bad so its not in my sinuses - I have become so obsessed smelling everything and become so fixated with it. The paint used was called valspar and having googled it other people complained of the vile smell which they likened to cat urine.

Valspar from B&Q can smell really awful. So bad that my local paint recycling project actually gives it away rather than asks for financial donations.

There is something called Wall Odour Phenomenon. It is to do with the reaction of the paint with bacteria on your wall. We had it in a relatively new build using (ironically) low odour paint. As soon as I came in the house after it was painted, I could smell what smelt like a public toilet. I made a complaint and received a voucher for some sealant and then fresh paint from a different brand.

Thank you for your replies. This is not good. The decorator has become very defensive and said she has had no other complaints and even spoke to B&Q about it. Whilst she was here I was cleaning my bedroom out and discovered mould on the chip board of a chest of drawers which I have now disposed of - she has said this will have caused the smell and I probably have mould in the house. The house is cold and probably damp as I did not put the heating on much due to cost of living but I find it strange the smell has come after paining and there are other reviews about this paint and the vile odour.

"The house is cold and probably damp as I did not put the heating on much due to cost of living"

It's far more likely that that's your issue. Paint can smell but if the smell is off your clothes it's damp.

We had this but with Crown paint. I painted a wall blue in a bedroom. And it smelt of cat wee. Even usually stoic DH agreed We had to paint over the wall with a sealant and then used dulux paint. This did the trick.
