Why does DH's shirt look like this? (Warning: gross pic attached)

This is supposed to be a white shirt that has just come out of the wash. I'm ironing it now and the collar looks disgusting. I've had a look at more shirts in DH's wardrobe and some look similar.

Is there something that we need to be doing in addition to just sticking it in the washing machine?

It's from sweat. Try some oxy to whiten it and leave it drying in the sun.

Seeline · 10/04/2025 11:26

Pre treat with vanish - make it into a paste, really work it in and leave on for a while.

wash all whites together with an extra scoop of vanish in the wash.
Dry in the sun if possible.

Do it the same each time.

wantmorenow · 10/04/2025 11:26

Napisan soak works a treat for whites. Even works on my daughter's McDonald's cooking oil smelly shirts.

Radiatorvalves · 10/04/2025 11:28

Looks like DS’s school shirt…. Agree with PPs but in DS case it’s also because he wears it more than once and after sport. Grrr.

Once you've got rid of it, in future give the collar and cuffs a quick spray with any of the oxy action stain removing sprays before you put it in the wash. Most of the supermarkets do their own brand. This should stop it building up in the future and aviod you having to do more mega soaks.

This.

It's very difficult to get rid of stains once they've been ingrained and washed and ironed. The heat sets the stains. Far better to treat them before washing.

Check the cuffs as well.

Why are you worrying about this instead of your h?

LazyArsedMagician · 10/04/2025 12:29

Honestly you don't even need any oxy action.

Use some cheap shampoo and rub some into the grubby bits before you put through the washing machine. Do that every time and it keeps things spic (or is it spick?!) and span. I used to do that for my shirts when I wore them, worked excellently and mine was often grubby with make up too.

It works better because it's body grime and oils rather than just staining.

doodlydooo · 10/04/2025 14:05

Thank you everyone for the advice! That's very much appreciated 🤩 will relay to DH too.

You can also use elbow grease spray I've had good results with that

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 10/04/2025 14:25

Why are you even washing his shirts?

Because that’s what people do when they’re together? I usually do the washing, but sometimes he does it. Doesn’t matter, really!

Springhassprungthesunisout · 10/04/2025 16:54

Oxy spray - and maybe he needs to use a loofah mitt on his neck if he finds it hard to reach?

LittleGreenDragons · 10/04/2025 17:05

Gosh this has brought back memories. My DBs school shirts used to look like that and DM used to make them wash their necks (and behind their ears) more often. That always worked.

Seeline · 10/04/2025 17:09

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 10/04/2025 14:25

Why are you even washing his shirts?

Do couples really only wash their own clothes?
So two separate white washes?
Who does the bedding?

Does it work for other household chores - only buy and cook food for yourself, hoover half a room, only take out your own rubbish?

Oh give over. I do all the laundry in our house and DH does all the ironing. It's called "sharing responsibilities". It's what normal people do in a happy relationship.

🙄

doodlydooo · 10/04/2025 19:18

@BellissimoGecko @blackrabbitwhiterabbit
Oh my goodness me! It is actually DH who does the laundry most of the time and the ironing. I just happened to be ironing his shirt as he was running late this morning and I noticed it.

And as for why I'm worrying about it and not him... I suppose I'll have to ask him whether he's worrying about it or not 🙄 for me it looks dirty and unsightly and I want it fixed. Maybe DH hasn't noticed or doesn't care...

I will also relay this specific point about the back of his neck 🤣

From what I've read though I suspect the stain has settled from multiple wears and not putting them in the wash after one wear 🧐 (eurgh!)

SparklyGlitterballs · 10/04/2025 19:25

My DDs school shirts used to look like this. I made a point of giving them a quick scrub with some laundry soap before putting them in the machine. I also had to keep reminding her to wash her neck properly, as a quick splash of water in the shower was not enough.

mangomaggie · 10/04/2025 19:26

Following this does anyone know how to get sweat stains out of armpits of white shirts ?

Elbow grease spray or white vinegar sunlight is a must

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/04/2025 00:25

Those recommding the Elbow Grease spray - is this the cleaning spray ( I have one yellow/lemon and one pink/floral) is it that or a dedicated fabric spray ?

I really like the sprays and if they work on mucky fabric I'd be so pleased
