Vacuum cleaner upright vs cylinder

Hi

My trusty Sebo Felix is dying. The motor is going strong still but the plastic casing is broken and I’m not sure we can fix it . I’ve had it 12 years or so, so it’s done well.

So I figure it’s time for a new one

i love the Felix as we do have some large rooms - and it does great on both carpet and hard floors but it is heavy to haul up and down stairs so am considering a cylinder.

No pets but I have a lot of hair as does DS.

We have a rechargeable Vax for quick kitchen cleanups and I really can tell the difference in the lack of decent carpet cleaning power.

So ideas please :)

Budget - don’t really want to go over £400.

I have a Meile cat and dog cylinder (the pet isn’t necessary, I own neither a cat or dog) that’s almost 10 years old and still going strong. I believe they are still often recommended as being very good. I love it and have never had any problems with it, and can get it up the stairs easily enough despite being very middle-aged and getting a bit decrepit with aches and pains.

I bought a Shark one ( 10 m cord) with the lift off cannister for stairs .
Lots of people love the Henry vacs as they are lightweight but powerful but a pain as they tip over .

I bought a George 3-in1 and it is powerful , great if I want to do a really god deep clean but up need to get someone to hold it if I'm doing stairs in case it falls ( I would come out worse)

I do prefer an upright to a cylinder

Virtually every part of Sebo machines can be replaced, so I would look into having it repaired. I wouldn’t downgrade from a Sebo to a Shark or Henry.

I like my upright vacuum after having multiple cylinder types. I got sick of dragging them around behind me, knocking into furniture with a huge hose, bulky to store as well. The upright I have is light weight, and I love it! I also have a mini handheld vacuum, which works great on the stairs, takes seconds, and really good suction. I also prefer my upright vax vacuum carpet washer too, after having a huge heavy Henry drag around 3 in 1 washer thing!

upright, every time. Or cordless stick, for preference.

Thanks everyone

update: to my delight a local repair shop fixed it for a very small fee. It might not last forever but it’s saved me splashing a few £100 on a new vac

I'm having a similar debate from the other direction. The big plus of uprights is a powered rotating brush to help with pick up, and the big plus of cylinders (for me) is the retractable cord. Our basic Miele cylinder has plenty of suck but it irritates me that the only agitation the carpet gets is me physically moving the wand over,, which is basically flat with a tiny bit of red velour stuff in the middle. Me scrubbing the carpet with the little velour bit seems very inefficient, and it leaves a lot of hair behind IMO. Maybe I am doing it wrong.

One solution is a turbo brush but I find them annoyingly whiny and I don't think they have much power. So I am favouring an upright sebo next time to get the powered brush. Just working up to spending so much though. I find it so annoying to wind up the cord though.

One option you could consider is a sebo cylinder with the powered head. They've basically taken a Felix powered head (I think) and stuck it on the end of the hosepipe of a cylinder vac. Best of both worlds? Or weird Frankenstein machine that compromises all the benefits of a cylinder machine? I don't know the answer.

You’re right, some Sebo cylinder models use the very same head as the Felix (they also sell a version wired for use with central vacuum systems). There’s no downside to this, unless you only have hard floors, in which case it’s an unecessary expense.

I definitely would like the rotating brush head. As we do have quite a lot of carpeted areas.

Will keep that in mind for when my Sebo finally does call it a day :)
