Best bed and mattress recommendations?

Chalatte · 28/03/2025 13:55

We're in the market for a new bed and mattress and I'm flummoxed at all the options. My husband is looking at brands like simba but he's usually influenced by ads and what his friends recommend, which are always high end but not necessarily best value!
I would like something firm that's not too saggy or bouncy, and also that won't get too sweaty at nights

For beds there seem to be plenty of options for what I need but not sure what to do about mattresses

I'm open to recommendations on what worked for you?

When buying make sure that the mattress has two side so it can be flipped upside down and not just rotated from too to bottom. This will give you twice as long mattress life.
When did mattress manufacturers introduce the very lucrative practice of making only one side of the mattress “sleepable” on ?

Chalatte · 28/03/2025 14:32

Didn't even know this was a thing! Once you mentioned it I saw it said that the mattress is a non-turn one 😅
Who knew!?

I didn’t and parted with over €1000 for a 6ft zip and link.
So so disappointed.
Rotating it doesn’t prevent much sagging ☹️

I have an Emma which I think is probably similar to a Simba and I absolutely detest it. It's dipped at either size, it's boiling and you can't turn it. Absolutely hate it!!
So as you can tell, I wouldn't recommend an Emma!

Chalatte · 28/03/2025 15:00

Thanks. So far, I Know NOT to go for an Emma or a Simba. And none of the ones that cannot turn!

So, any suggestions what I could actually get?!😄

Go to JYSK..try them out .
I'm severely disabled and l got a cooling gel gold memory foam mattress from there and it's the best I've ever had.
They know their stuff.

EvolvedAlready · 28/03/2025 15:01

Hypnos pillow top- medium. I’ll never look back.

Sueno for your bed, order your swatches.

Maitri108 · 28/03/2025 15:07

I have an Otty Hybrid. It's firm but not hard. I've had it for several years and it hasn't sagged. Although it has memory foam it has a cooling layer so I've never been too hot.

It's a hybrid so you can't turn it over but you can regularly turn it round.

A lot of Mumsnetters in the UK recommend John Ryan by Design based in Manchester.
or the Premier Inn mattress.
i’m not sure if it can be flipped over.

deeahgwitch · 29/03/2025 08:54

I just checked.
The Premier Inn mattress does not have two sides. ☹️

hby9628 · 29/03/2025 09:21

@EvolvedAlreadyim so glad you said that. I’m waiting for mine to arrive. I have an Emma which I hate. Terrible for my back. Im
hoping the Hypnos will be a massive improvement but they aren’t cheap so I’m nervous too!

I've found some very affordable, turntable mattress by silent night(something like 1200 spring) and I'm almost about to go buy, it looks pretty solid and reliable, and compared to simba can be turned and costs a fraction of the cost! With the sales it's £300ish which sounds like a good value for money deal. Thoughts?

I'm on the dreams website(just based off of the fact that they have several branches and should be reliable) and was going to grab one of their beds also
All of this will set me back by less than half of what I was budgeting for it which is a steal!

We went to a bed shop a few weeks ago to try out all the mattresses then bought the one we wanted half the cost on eBay brand new and delivered.

got a really nice Sealey mattress that was £2k in the shop for £1.1k.

i wouldn’t buy a mattress blindly online without knowing what it feels like in reality as these are expensive purchases and returns are difficult.

Triakne · 29/03/2025 10:01

Yes agree re Hypnos, I love mine

Plump82 · 29/03/2025 18:18

Do you have a link to the Silentnight ones OP?

I've book marked the Sealy Mellbreak which is coming in just over £400

maldivemoment · 30/03/2025 09:36

We’ve got the Premier Inn mattress on an Ikea frame. Would recommend

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 30/03/2025 10:01

Just remember, if you are normal weight without any physical issues you really don't need a "firm" mattress.
Our best one has been a Shakespeare, bought from an independent furniture shop. We have tried all sorts down the years.

Chalatte · 01/04/2025 08:36

Great, appreciate all the advice! As one of the posters suggested we ultimately walked into a shop (Dreams) and tried the mattresses. Going in and checking out the look and feel really helped make the decision, otherwise I was just going around in circles!
Ultimately we settled on a silent night one (sleepharmony 3450) with one of their beds, poorer by ~£2k but so satisfied with our decision in the end!
