Are roombas/ robot hoovers worth it?

I’m sick of cleaning these goddam floors but it really pisses me off when they’re messy.

is a robot hoovers worth it? I’ve seen a few that are hoover + mop that I like the look of but they’re £600+ for the decent brands that don’t have appalling reviews.

If You have one, is it worth it?

I would also love to hear about this, and if they are worth it even if you don’t have a big open plan house.

Ohisitjustme · 28/03/2025 13:30

Not the mop part. It basically drags a cloth (which immediately gets dirty) around the floor.
A good robot vacuum is handy though!

pearbottomjeans · 28/03/2025 13:30

Yes. We’ve had a eufy for about 5 years and still going strong. Just moved him upstairs, and bought a new eufy which also mops for downstairs. She does a great job. Literally makes SUCH a big difference to our lives, coming home to a cleaner house. Lovely! Obviously can’t do skirting boards or stairs so still have to get the actual hoover out sometimes annoyingly! Highly recommend eufy though.

TicTac80 · 31/03/2025 00:11

I’ve got the Eufy robovacs with the spinning mop heads, and they’re great :) wooden and quarry tile floor downstairs, wooden floors upstairs. I have four cats and two kids, and the Eufys keep the place really clean. The one downstairs cleans the floor twice a day, the one upstairs does it just the once a day.

GreenLeaf25 · 31/03/2025 00:20

Hello! Sorry to hijack. I’ve just bought the IRobot mop & vacuum but you have to swap out the containers between doing both. Very annoyed by that. I was really happy with my Eufy vacuum - so considering swapping it over. Which models do you both have?

WeegieWan · 31/03/2025 00:53

Am I using my Eufy wrong then? It takes over an hour to vacuum just my flat's hallway, kitchen floor and bathroom (all hard floors) and then needs to go for a lie-down for a couple of hours to recharge. This is a job I can get done in 10-15 minutes with my Dyson. Plus having to shut all the doors of the rooms you don't want it to go into because if you don't it WILL get sidetracked in to them guaranteed, and then stay there, also clearing the floors of the bits and bobs like wastepaper baskets and kitchen bins - and god forbid there's any wiring nearby, it goes straight for it... I've had the phone and the modem both dragged across the floor.

At this point it just feels like such a waste of money and so not worth the effort, so if anyone has any tips on how to make it vacuum efficiently, please share!

Ecocool · 31/03/2025 01:12

I live in a townhouse and keep the vaccum robot on the top floor so I can do the bedrooms very easily. Gets under the beds. I take it to the middle floor now and again. I like it.

Yes that’s the problem with our old one, you’ve got to prep and make sure it can’t get tangled, and close any doors. The new one room maps, and you can set it to just do a zone if there’s loads of crumbs under the table or something. Problem with the new one is there doesn’t seem to be a remote so can’t steer it yourself, which I find helpful with the old one.

@GreenLeaf25 I think we have a omni c20 and an old one.

MattCauthon · 31/03/2025 10:03

Idon't know why it takes so long. I put ours on downstairs so it does kitchen/diner, lounge and hallway and it takes about 40 minutes. Yes, I could do it faster, but I put it on and then I go and do something else.

To answer the original question, we love ours. Although I think I'd like to get another one as I find the hassle of moving it around between floors quite annoying and somehow it stops me using it as often as I would like to. I leave ours on while I walk the dog or do the school run, or sometimes while I'm doing other cleaning, and it makes a huge difference.

I'm interested to hear that th ereports on the mop ones on this thread are better - I think in the beginning that was pretty weak but clearly they're improving.

Buy the highest level of suction you can.

Takemymindoff · 31/03/2025 10:03

From experience and I sound really daft, but it only works if you turn it on!😆

To explain, we have one, schedule was set to clean daily, using my iPad. Slowly overtime, I started to reduce the schedule ( don't let ‘him’ clean today, there are things on the floor, don't put him on, he needs emptying…).

Now, no schedule in place and we hardly use him.

Danger of any gadget I suppose.

LadyDanburysHat · 31/03/2025 10:16

We love ours. It is set to go on at 7am every day, so is done before anyone comes downstairs. You do need to make sure you don't have any cables in the way etc. It means you never have messy looking floors, and you can just do a proper vacuum once in a while.

Costacoffeeplease · 31/03/2025 10:45

I have 3, love them

TerroristToddler · 31/03/2025 10:54

We have an older model Eufy - got it in an Amazon sale a few years back for around £150. Doesn't mop (though am eyeing up one with mop function).

It's on a timer so comes out at 9am daily, and on weekends when we're home and make more mess it also does a 8pm shift too!

It's fantastic. In the mornings I just wipe all the breakfast crumbs and stuff off the surfaces onto the floor and walk off safe in the knowledge that 'Hoovie' will sort it all for me during the day. Bonus is that under sofas and under dining table is super clean, whereas before I barely bothered with those hard to reach places!#

ours has self-empty function, so we only need to empty the bigger dust tank now and again.

It takes the eufy an hour but it doesn’t take you any time. My dishwasher takes 3 and 1/2 hours on a standard session, it would take me less time but it would still take up some of my time.

Make sure wires are tucked away and it just goes round the bins.

Lovegame · 31/03/2025 12:59

And OP the mop is crap the hoover but is great.

BoredZelda · 31/03/2025 13:04

Absolutely. It doesn’t do a pukka thorough job but it deals with a daily clean.

Top Tip though, pay extra for the Roomba that has rubber bumpers rather than brushes. It is noisier but you won’t spend your day fishing cables and shoelaces out of it.

I haven’t gone for the mop one yet, but I do really hate mopping the floors. They get really mixed reviews, but if I find a good one, I’d go for it.

TherealmrsT · 31/03/2025 13:09

Old eufy used to take a couple of hours doing his random bumble round our downstairs.
New eufy has a better mapping function and gets everywhere in about 30 mins, basically he goes up and down in strips.
No pets or children, hard flooring. Eufy scheduled for 3 times a week keeps the bits under control, wouldn't be without him now and did replace the old one as soon as it gave up.

bumbers1 · 31/03/2025 13:26

We have an old basic Eufy. I love it. You can just leave it to potter around by itself while you go and do something else.

SparrowFeet · 31/03/2025 13:28

I absolutely love my Roomba. Yes it takes longer than doing it myself but I can put it on and get on with other things. It does the daily clean really well and it's surprising how much dust it sucks up using it daily downstairs.
We're a little team!

HarryVanderspeigle · 31/03/2025 13:36

I think it is only useful if you have clear floors. If kids are dropping toys everywhere and you have tassels on your sofa cover, it works less well. Speaking from experience!

HoppingPavlova · 31/03/2025 13:41

Myst depend on what you get. Mine goes and cleans its mops when it senses they are dirty. It will stop mid-clean, announce its mop pads need cleaning. Takes itself back. Cleans and rinses its mop pads then sets out again. If the floor is quite grim it will take itself back numerous times. I’ve picked it up and looked and they don’t even look too dirty when it says they are, if it was a mop I’d keep pushing it around in that state.

I wouldn’t get one again though, but only because when ours comes out, anyone home at the time comes out and stands and just watches it. Like it’s some rare animal in the wild. In the time they do this, they could have done the floors themselves so not sure what it has saved us time wise frankly. The boys also seem to find the cleaning logs fascinating stuff 🤷‍♀️.

Also, it listens and talks which annoys me. Sometimes it thinks you are talking to it if you mention the word ‘clean’ and will come ask what you want it to do. I had one episode where someone came into my bedroom, I said it was in there cleaning, next thing it whizz’s out of the ensuite it was busily cleaning asking what I want. It didn’t understand anything when I kept telling it politely I wasn’t talking to it, and kept repeating itself. Was only when I finally said ‘nothing, fuck off and crack the fuck on’, it said ‘okay, recommencing cleaning’ and off it went. Creepy little fucker😳. Does clean well though.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 31/03/2025 13:41

We have the irobot 9+ which hoovers and mops. We have it set every day before we all get up. Encourages us to keep things tidier. No it won’t ever replace a human doing it but it’s cut it down to us doing it from every day to a good scrub once a month so i’ll take that as a win!

Darkclothes · 31/03/2025 14:16

We've got an Eufy X10 Pro omni. It mops and vacs. If it gets to a rug, it knows to lift itself up a bit to get onto the rug! We can set it off when not in the house from the phone app.

We do normally tidy up beforehand though, and often remove dog toys/her bed/certain rugs and plugs from the floor. The pre-tidy is a PITA, but worth it. Our entire downstairs is tiled, and I'm always amazed how filthy the cleaning water is in the machine! I still use a regular vacuum, but far less often.

painauchoc512 · 31/03/2025 14:22

We have a roomba hoover and wouldn’t be without it. We’re in a bungalow so it’s fab. We also have the mop and don’t rate it so well or use it as often. It takes ages and leaves streaks. It also can’t get over most of our floor transition strips, which the hoover clears easily.

MaggieBsBoat · 31/03/2025 14:38

We’ve got a cheap one from Lidl!! Had it for 8 years now and it’s amazing. Around 60 quid if memory serves.
