Has anyone got an Emma mattress? Any good?

We need new mattresses for the twin beds in our spare room. DH wants to buy ones from Emma but I've heard they are quite firm. The spare room beds both have wooden frames and slatted bases.

I'm inclined to buy pocket sprung ones instead.

The spare room is only used a few times a year so would like to keep spending per mattress to under £400.

Does anyone have an Emma mattress and, if so, would you recommend?

I bought Nectar.
Awful mattress. Never again.

I had an Emma mattress. It was rock hard! I hated it so much I gave it away and bought a simba one which is much more comfortable.

Thanks for your responses. I'm worried about the firmness. DH like a firm mattress but I don't. Not that we will be the ones sleeping on them but I think he isn't worried about the reviews saying they are too firm

Mattresses are about personal preference. So my experience is complete opposite of whirlyhead's.
We had a Simba one and I found it far too soft. It also lost its 'bounce' within a couple of years, so there was a ridge down the middle where neither of us slept and troughs along each side where we did. Despite regular turning and neither of us being large people.
We now have an Emma one. Had it about a year and find it far more comfortable because it is firmer and more supportive.

Best bet is to go somewhere and try different mattresses and find what works for you.

my Emma is into it’s 4th year and holding up well. It is firm and still is but for me it’s a good and comfy firm not rock hard. I have really bad back, neck and joint problems and soft mattresses are terrible for me. Just got the Emma pillow and didn’t like it at all. No problem returning it. I think there’s not a lot to lose as theres a trial period. My bf likes it (also has back issues ) and is a fussy bugger and keeps saying he needs to get one but never does. I think mine is the original and I think they offer more options now. My friend got one though and doesn’t like it. It’s such a personal thing. Mine has worn very well and I spend a lot of time in bed when I’m home esp in winter, just to keep warm

I have an Eve mattress, it’s been fine but after four years I’m now finding it’s too firm (I’m getting arthritis in my ankles and hips)

If we were getting a new mattress for us I'd definitely go and try loads out. But it's for the spare room and there will be different people sleeping on them. So I want to get good "all round" ones.

Maybe we should buy one Emma and one pocket sprung?

I like our Emma but after 5 years there's a definite ridge in the middle. I would not have described it as especially firm.

Rubybetsie · 10/03/2025 11:48

I had an Emma mattress...way too hard..was terrible for my back..sent it back for a refund..which they were a pain in the arse about.

CCLCECSC · 10/03/2025 11:49

Our Emma is 4 years old now. Initially loved it but I'd say in the last year definitely not a fan of it anymore. Wouldn't purchase a new one

FatherFrosty · 10/03/2025 11:50

Absolutely awful
I ended up on the sofa as I had crippling back pain and hip pain as a result of it

dh thought it was fantastic though.

on the advice of here I contacted Emma who sent a topper free of charge which made it bareable, still not comfortable

ethelredonagoodday · 10/03/2025 11:53

I liked the firmness, but I couldn't cope with the memory foam, which made me hotter and sweatier than satan's armpit, so ours was returned.

If yours is going in a spare room it's maybe less of an issue though.

pinksavannah · 10/03/2025 11:59

Yeah although I had to return my Emma mattress

They conduct heat and in the summer after a few hours it would dip and caused me horrible back pain ( I had just had a baby so was a heat conductor myself!)

They were great at returning & refunding though , just not for me

I bought a firm mattress with a Panda topper and this is great for me

TellmethestoryofO · 10/03/2025 12:05

Honestly they're awful mattresses, I like a firm mattress but there was no give in this at all. Ended up with hip pain, lasted a few months then had to get rid!

Autumnblues24 · 10/03/2025 12:05

Personally I prefer ikea mattresses.

jumpintheline · 10/03/2025 12:11

We have one and love it. Don’t personally find it firm

elenaf · 10/03/2025 12:14

I had to return ours - it gave me hip pain, which I never had before it since, and I found it very hard, even with the topper.

WorriedRelative · 10/03/2025 12:20

DH and I both like ours, it has started to get a bit of a ridge down the middle now, it is still comfortable but it perhaps won't last as long as hoped. For the price I would have another though.

For a spare bed I would go for it. It won't get the same wear with the same person lying/sitting in the same place, and it won't be used everyday.

Mattresses are personal preference. Whatever you get some guests will like and some will not.

Dresdemer · 10/03/2025 12:23

We have an Emma. It was too hard for me but OK once they sent me the free topper. However the smell of the mattress set off my migraines. I ended up sleeping on the sofa for over 2 weeks while trying to air it out. We got there in the end and I can't imagine it is a common problem.

Also be warned that it is "floppy" and heavy which makes it much harder to move around than a pocket sprung mattress. It doesn't easily stand on its side, it wants to flop over. It's not a deal-breaker but did make it hard to move outside to air etc, which was more of an issue than I'd expected.

After buying our Emma we have bought 2 IKEA pocket sprung mattresses and much prefer them. You can get them in UK sizes.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 10/03/2025 12:44

Thanks @Dresdemer . I hadn't realized about them being "floppy".
