Toilets and limescale

We live in a hard water area. I seem to do ok at keeping the limescale at bay in the water bit, but I have realised today there is a build up under the rim. I only noticed as I was wiping the floor earlier and could see it from that angle!

Any suggestions on what to use as I gave it a quick scrub and it's not really shifted.

We have a septic tank so need to bear that in mind with what we can put down the toilet!

Harpic power in the black bottle, comes in a directional bottle so you can get it under the rim, leave as long as possible (preferably overnight) and might need a second application if it's really bad but this stuff will shift it.

Hadn't spotted the septic tank bit of your post sorry, no idea if it would be ok or not so can't help with that bit.

I sympathise. I have hard water and a septic tank too.
Scrubbing it off with pumice works, but it's a bit icky to do and requires elbowgrease. I usually delegate the job to DH.

I've used Kilrock gel in the past (thankfully now have a water softener). I think it's ok for septic tanks. It clings quite well under the rim where things like toilet cleaner or bleach run off. I would paint it on in the evening and leave it overnight or longer, you may need to do this quite a few times if there's a stubborn patch, but it will work eventually.

I soak kitchen towels with white vinegar, then stick them on.

Heavy limescale here.. and I use a bottle of white vinegar weekly then the harpic power in the black bottle.. but do check its suitable for septic tanks

Citric acid.

Harpic power plus deep clean tablets - but you would have to check regarding the tank. But they are great. Then the black harpic gel mentioned above.

It may be worth investing in a rimless toilet. They are extremely easy to clean!

Coca cola

Noseyoldcow · 14/03/2025 19:03

Delphis Eco is ok for septic tanks.

Thanks I’m attempting this today armed with Ecover and white vinegar. The power plus tablets are fine in septic tanks but they only do the limescale in the bottom of the bowl. The black bottle harpic is sadly not suitable. I spent a long time in Asda reading the backs of bottles!
