How to get rid of Fruit flies?

They are swarming into our kitchen - MIL's glass of wine was put down for 5mins, and 12 or so floating about in it!!!!
Any ideas?

Oh I will watch with interest - they have been in our kitchen with a vengence. I've tried citronella oil which worked briefly but you must need to apply it regularly. The smell is too awful. Have you tried the candles?

This works, was recommended to me last year by a MNer and I was delighted with teh results!

We had this problem a while back. Basically you want to be checking for any bits of food which may have fallen down the side of cupboards unnoticed and getting rid of them; also they like standing water so places like the little drainage tray at the back of your fridge (if you have one) and the u-bend under your kitchen sink - empty these of any water and clean thoroughly. If there is any standing water outside near your kitchen window, in drains for example, this can also be a source. It can take some time to get rid of them, good luck!

that wikihow link is funny. I like 'crush each one with your fingertips', and the cooking in the oven trap - quietly close the oven door.
Turn on the oven to 400ºF/200ºC for about 10-15 minutes and majority of your fruit flies will be gone. Clean the oven thoroughly.
Lol, I'd rather have fruit flies bugging me than clean my oven thoroughly.

They're not inside the oven, etc, thank god - just flying about!

We had this problem for weeks and then found that they were coming out of a pot plant. Must have laid eggs there. We ditched the plant and a few days later they were gone.

You need to get to the source of the problem and get rid. Ours was a bag of long forgotten rotting potatoes in our understairs cupboard btw !
