When do you hang clothes outside?

Now that the days are brighter, was just wondering if there was a cut off temperature you use to decide when the laundry gets put outside?

I think it depends on what aspect your garden faces.

Even in winter, if the sky is clear and the sun's out, laundry can be hung out in a south facing garden imo.

My garden is north facing so in winter if the sun's out, it's pretty pointless.

I think I'll start drying outdoors again around march time.

I had loads out on Saturday, it was 14 degrees and sunny and things dried in no time. It’s sunny now, only 9 degrees, but I’ve got a load in and will be putting it out after.

Don't have a tumble dryer so out all year round unless it's raining, also have a heated airer for the occasions when it does rain.

It's not that hard to get things dry, just need to look at the weather forecast and wash when it's dry if you can.

I'm in London so probably drier and warmer than much of the country, but have still only had my washing out a couple of times so far this year. I have to be confident it isn't going to rain, really.

For the last two years I barely put any washing out at all thanks to the two consecutive absolutely abysmal spring and summers. I am praying fervently for better weather this year.

I put mine out from around April onwards, our garden faces northeast so the sun is at the back all day pretty much. I can put things out and have them back in in half an hour sometimes! Otherwise it goes in the dryer, as unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of a lot of space to designate a room for drying. And I hate wet washing draped all over the house!

BourbonsAreOverated · 26/02/2025 10:37

Mine dried about 80% yesterday and just needed finishing off in the tumble dryer for half hour.
if it’s sunny and cold it will still dry, as long as the sun hits it.

My friend taught me that if it's dry enough to dry the patio slabs, the washing will dry. If they're still damp, the washing will remain damp.

That works for me.

I found that a washing line dries clothes quicker than a rotary airer. I miss my clothes line.

EleanorReally · 26/02/2025 10:42

all year round

FuzzyPuffling · 26/02/2025 10:43

Always if it's not actually raining.
I was given a tumble dryer 5 years ago and have never used it. Not once!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 26/02/2025 10:56

My biggest bugbear is hanging it out to have to bring it in and rehang it. So when it's warm and the washing line is in the sun, usually happens around April.

offmynut · 26/02/2025 11:14

Never hang outside it goes from the washer to the dryer and packed away.

We're north-facing but it dries outside all year round. We have the benefit of a coastal breeze though!

When the paving slabs on the path/patio are dry. If they're still wet then the washing isn't going to dry anyway.
