Kettle Recommendations for a Hard Water Area

Hi

The limescale build up in my kettle is becoming a nightmare. I keep descaling it but it's barely making a difference now so I think it's time to admit defeat... It's years old so it's probably time to treat myself given that I drink 5-6 cups of tea a day...

If anyone has any recommendations for a kettle in a hard water area that'd be great! After a lot of Googling I've decided that plastic interiors are evil 😂so now I'm after a stainless steel or glass one...

Any recommendations are appreciated - thank you! ☕

I live in a hard water area and have a stainless steel dome kettle.

I put white vinegar in it after it's boiled every so often to keep it clear

Don't get a glass kettle. They show a ring at the water line really quickly.

Or, if you get a stove top one, you can put it in the dishwasher.

StrawberryFreckles · 17/02/2025 23:01

I have a glass kettle and I chuck some lemon juice in the bottom once a week.

AnSolas · 17/02/2025 23:04

Use one of these too

Flat bottomed kettle which is stainless steal. I don't descale as other as I should, but compared to you in probably boiling mine a lot less.

Good point about glass kettles, I hadn't thought of that! Thank you!

Watching with interest.
More suggestions eagerly awaited.

Oust All Purpose Descaler is great. I have very hard water and there aren't kettles which prevent build up. I have a Bosch. Don't get a glass kettle.

khaa2091 · 18/02/2025 08:27

Agree avoid glass kettles.
i am perfectly happy with a Tesco £17 plastic one which is going strong after 4 years and I found have no concern replacing. The expensive Russell Hobbs only lasted a year.

Plexie · 18/02/2025 08:28

Russell Hobbs stainless steel kettle - easy to descale (not that I do it very often).

Do you have one of those little metal squishy things too? I don't know if they make much difference but limescale builds up on them and then it's easy to take out and squeeze the scale off.

apostrophewoman · 18/02/2025 08:38

Use a filter jug, and just use filtered water in your kettle, much nicer cup of tea as well!

SmallChanges3 · 18/02/2025 08:44

What's wrong with a glass kettle providing you descale it regularly? My Russell Hobbs kettle is 8 years old and still looks new. I use it every day. I do use filtered water in it though as it tastes and looks nicer. I live in a very hard water area.

I have a stovetop, stainless steel kettle (Pro Cookshop have some, as was in there yesterday and spotted them), with a kettle protector, which is a game changer. Prior to the addition of KP, I'd have to descale, now nope, just leave it in the kettle and scale be gone. I'd add that I live in an area with very hard water and it copes with that. Hardware shops sell from about a £1.50 and save a fortune in descaler! I don't like plastic kettles either, as the water always tastes odd to me.

StrawberryFreckles · 18/02/2025 09:03

I don't use filtered water in a very hard water area and my glass kettle also looks perfect. I want glass so I am reminded if it needs some lemon juice in it. I

My problem in a very hard water area with a stainless steel kettle was scale around the lid on the outside unless I wiped it carefully after every use.
I now have a Kenwood Dawn in cream, which doesn’t seem to get that problem I chose the cream because I thought the limescale wouldn’t show, but in fact it never seems to stick on there at all - I think it might have been condensation from the steam, because the steel becomes colder than the plastic when the kettle cools. It has a very good spout filter and a concealed element, so scale inside isn’t a problem either.
I chose the Kenwood because Which? magazine said it was ‘the best kettle they’d ever tested’

Noseyoldcow · 18/02/2025 09:09

At the risk of jinxing it, our kettle is old enough that I can't remember when I bought it. At least 5 or 6 years ago. We live in a very hard water area, and I use a kettle saver thingy, and descale regularly with whatever descaler is to hand. It's a Cuisinart stainless steel one, it heats water to 100 degree or 85 degrees as you choose to suit different beverages. Just checked and it seems to be available at Robert Dyas and Amazon, I bought ours from Costco.

This ^^ with bells on .
A Kenwood Dawn it is.

Once a week, boil kettleful of water and ass a teaspoon of citric acid. Leave to cool. Empty and rinse. Better than vinegar, I think.

I live in a hard water area and after getting so fed up with constant descaling I bought myself a water filter jug. I only use this filtered water in my kettle and there is hardly any scale , even after a few months - a revelation for me and my kettle remains like new

OceanofNight · 03/03/2025 14:42

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'll definitely be using some of these tips! 😊

Water filter jug.
And the occasional descale with white vinegar when the filter needs changing.

Hopeful16 · 03/03/2025 15:02

We have a kettle with a britta filter in it. Not overly expensive and does the trick.

We have a stainless steel Dualit kettle, it’s a good few years old. Descaled regularly with a scoop of citric acid. It’s spotless inside and we live in a hard water area.

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 05/03/2025 21:46

I've a delonghi stainless steel kettle, I do the white vinegar thing once a month, and soak a strip of cotton wool in it and wrap that around the rim lid to descale it. Had it about 8 years now.
I'm after a new kettle as I'd like a flip top lid ideally. But haven't found anything I like yet. We use filtered water but still get limescale, just a bit slower.

Aparecium · 05/03/2025 22:12

I like my glass kettle precisely because the limescale shows, so I can tell it's time to descale before the limescale ruins the tea.
