How and where do you store all your coats/shoes/hats/scarves?

We seem to have a mountain of this kind of stuff and I dont know the best way to store it so it doesn't look like one big jumble sale as soon as you walk into the house. Would really prefer not to store it in the hall (no understairs cupboard), but not sure where else to put it, maybe in the playroom?
I also prefer to hang coats on hangers, not hooks as hooks seem to create odd looking creases but am finding it hard to find nice coat and hat rails like the ones you see everywhere in Scandinavia...
Any ideas anyone?

We have a huge cloakroom in the hall, right by the entrance. Everything goes in there, on hangers on a rail. Also wellies, outdoor shoes in frequent use. Hats, scarves, gloves on shelves.

Could you build a cupboard into your hall?

I'm not with it today but how about one of those hat/coat stand thingys (I'm sure there is a name for it but I can't remember) The ones that look a bit like a tree? I don't suppose you could use hangers on them though...
We keep the majority of shoes, hats etc under the stairs but also have a small basket to keep one or two pairs each by the porch.

we have a porch with pegs, ikea shoe racks and a basket for miscellenea like gloves

makes the house look a bit tatty from the outside but the hall is lovely and clear (when not full of huge pushchair, obv)

Ikea have a couple that take hangers thus and thus

WOuld love to have a porch or cupboard but its an old house, with quite a wide hall and no way of having either.
We have a tall coat stand thing Haylstones, but it keep toppling over as its so overloaded!!
Thanks for the links MrsB, they are nice but need something bit more "period" I think, or the other option is store all our gubbins in another room.
Victorian houses are rubbish for storage, am sure the Victorians didnt have any belongings!

What's under your stairs - can you build a cupboard there? We have a Victorian house, and have a coat cupboard, a filing cabinet, the hoover cupboard and a tiny cupboard for lightbulbs, batteries etc, in descending order as the space under the stairs decreases - it's fab!

Large built in cupboard in the hall. Space for shoes at the bottom, rail for hanging adult coats a the top, hanging shoe tidy with slots full of hats, gloves, scarves. Pegs on the end of the cupboard (under bookshelves and behind front door so tucked away a bit) for DCs to hang up their own coats.

I too have very little room in my wee vestibule so we tend to rotate coats and shoes.

All boots, wellies, umbrellas are in my utility room, other coats upstairs in the wardrobes.

Hats, scaves, gloves are in a fabric box that attachs to the wall on 2 pegs (that doesn't make sense does it) it was from ikea years ago and it was a set of 3 but due to lack of room I have sawn the wooden posts to make it a double.

My house is modern 14 year old thing and obviously desgined by someone who does not wear a coat or shoes otherwise they would have made the space to the side of the front door bigger than the tiny 30cm alcove that also houses a radiator!!!!!

We do have an understairs cupboard but it houses the washing machine and drier so cant use it...

if you have a spacious hall, why not get a freestanding cupboard - maybe an old wardrobe or something made by a local carpenter - to hold the basics?

We have a small cupboard in the hall, crammed full but at least it's all hidden away. I put away winter hats, scarves, etc in the summer - store them upstairs in a cupboard - and keep the summer hats in a basket on the floor of the cupboard.

That is very smart MrsB, but yes what a hefty price tag!

We have a shoe rack by the front door with current shoes on it
A coat rack with hooks on in the cloakroom (near front door)
Then out of season jackets and waterprrofs etc hanging in our wardrobes and an additional shoe rack in the bottom of my wardrobe for all the less frequent;ly worn shoes!

how about a giant wicker basket in the hall.. just put it out of the way when winter's over and pull it out again two -weeks-- later when the cold weather's back

We've got an extendable shower curtain pole in our downstairs loo. That houses all of the DS's outerwear. Underneath that (the pole is as high as I can get it - I stand on the toilet step to reach coats down), is a normal coat hook bar with all of our coats on. I try to keep some coats upstairs. We all have far to many. Shoes are in an Ikea shoe rack - nice and slim for the hall. DS's shoes have a wicker bin each, so I know where to look for each DS (or rather DH knows!). Hats etc are in wicker baskets on a bookcase in the hall.
