Struggling to make my bed!

I'm hoping that there's a wise mumsnetter or two who can help me.
I have an extra deep mattress, which is very heavy.
I've got arthritis in my hands, hips and back.
Tucking the fitted sheets (which are plenty big enough) around/under is a herculean task, even for my DP who is a builder and used to heavy lifting.
I've been looking for gadgets to help, I've seen the mattress wedges, but all the pictures I see of them are for flat divan beds, my bed has a lip.
Things I've thought of are getting a really old fashioned flat heavy cotton sheet, and somehow clipping the corners together, getting a decent topper with a removable washable cover, and hoping that I could leave it strapped on at the head end, and wiggling the cover on and off at the bottom which is more accessible.
I've looked at the scrunchie things, but they've got bad reviews, and the garter straps that you put under the mattress which I suppose might be OK if I can persuade DP to take the mattress off one time.
Has anyone got any tips apart from buying a new bed/mattress?

Are you sure the wedges wouldn't work? I think it might be worth a go. If you really can't get it started, could you use something like a fish slice, palette knife, wallpaper scraper, builder's trowel to get under the mattress then slide the wedge underneath that? Even a table knife might do it if it's a small lip.

I'm sure in Sweden and maybe Germany we have had mattress toppers where the sheet just goes round the topper, rather than over the main mattress too. That might be a good solution, but it would be expensive and you'd need extra, shallow sheets for the topper.

Is taking the sheets off easier than putting them on? If so maybe layer them up like people do with bedwetting, so you have some easier weeks.

After having bought a bed in a box type mattress once, I have a new found affection for the older box spring style! You don't realise how much easier they are to move until it's too late.

If you're struggling can't your husband help or take over that particular chore?

@MrsSlocombesCat I said in my post that he struggles too.
@Greenstamp I think I'll get some wedges to try.
Great idea about layering the sheets!
