Hi, does your cleaner have public liability insurance or this is not needed? Always had insured cleaners via agency but considering to hire a cleaner locally, most does not have insurance.

I always did. I never needed to use it luckily but it wasn't expensive, and gave reassurance to both me and my clients. I wouldn't touch a cleaner who didn't have it tbh, it was something like £200-£300 for the year, so a fiver a week.

ETA: I was also insured for keys, which was the main reason clients appreciated it I think.

I’m a self employed cleaner. I have insurance.
There are lots of self employed, solo cleaners who hold PL insurance and run their business legitimately so please take the time to find one that is.
If you’re burgled because an uninsured cleaner failed to secure your home, flooded the place or knocked your TV off the stand, you would want that sorting.

Thank you so much! I felt that I was overreacting as one of the cleaners who came with great recommendations told me she had never been asked for insurance in 8 years of her career and she is not willing to pay for it. Now I feel my senses are correct and I’ll look for another candidate.

I pay under £50 a year for my public liability insurance, with cover for up to a £1million.

I have never had to claim on it, and for that price I don't know why anyone wouldn't have it. Even if they are working without telling HMRC, they can still have insurance.

Key insurance I do not bother with, because on the one & only time I lost a set of keys, the client was fine about it. I never, ever, have identifying details on anyone's keys.
