I don't know how to recycle

I lived in a block of flats,
There was 2 black bins specifically for all
General waste, no recycling. I now live in a house and I'm clueless is it plastic,
Plastic and glass, paper?

What bins do you have?
Look on your council website to see what goes in which bin

Will depend on your council - look it up on their website.

MidnightBloom · 21/01/2025 23:17

Generally each council has there own requirements. Have a look on your council website. I recommend if you have space getting a compost bin.

dementedpixie · 21/01/2025 23:18

My council has bins for general waste, paper/cardboard, mixed recycling including glass and garden/food waste..

Yours might be different so check online for your council

Look on the back of all food packaging too as it usually tells you what bits can go where. For my area we have a mixed recycle bags but glass jars/bottles need to go to the tip and any soft plastics like bread wrappings are taken to the my local Tesco.

That sounds really inconvenient

Look on your council website about your specific local system. Some ask you to separate, some have it mixed.

Start with the basics - can't imagine anywhere doesn't do glass, tins, main plastics, paper/card.

Main thing is to rinse tins/jars etc.

Well lots of things in life are inconvenient but it’s still right that we do them. As other people say, look on your council’s website, it’s down to all of us to help stop things going to the landfill if they can be reduced or recycled.

LittleLegoTree · 22/01/2025 17:08

Google XYZ Council waste and recycling, and they will no doubt have chapter and verse. Each one is different. I’m in Cotswold District and we divide our waste and recycling into no fewer than SEVEN different receptacles for the kerbside collections. Have the people who lived there before not left you with the relevant bins and/or bags?

BBQPete · 22/01/2025 17:10

Adding to what everyone else has said, that this is Council specific.

What we do where I live is completely different from what friends and relatives in other areas need to do.

Go onto your local Authority's website for the information in your area.

It definitely could be improved but I don’t find it that bad. I usually do a trip to the tip every 6 weeks or so anyway so any glass jars go then. I take a bag of soft plastics to my local Tesco every 1-2 weeks whenever I am already visiting there anyway. The rest gets collected on bin day!
I think I could probably do glass at Tesco too thinking about it, Im sure there is a container in the car park 👍🏻
