Shower curtains that don't go mouldy?

Do such things exist? I've had a couple of shower curtains in the last two or three years (waffle fabric ones, made from polyester) and both have developed mould that the washing machine couldn't shift. Admittedly the bathroom was itself getting mouldy (thanks, shitty extractor fan contractor 8 years ago), but now that's been fixed and I'd like a curtain that won't go black within six months. Do I have to go down the PVC route?

I've in the last few months started pegging one bottom corner of the shower curtain up to the rail so the whole base of the curtain is fully opened out and not against the bath so it can dry properly, and touch wood, no mould yet.

If it's not able to dry quickly - within an hour or so - then I think you'll get mould regardless of what it's made of.

I have the thin material one, I just have to wash it regularly. We also have a shitty extractor fan, that obviously doesn’t extract enough moisture from the room.

I run mine through a 90° wash once a month or so with bleach instead of detergent, that keeps it at bay.

My shower curtain's label says not to use bleach - has it affected the material at all @ExtraDisorganised ?

Get a double curtain - a clear plastic inner one and a nice fabric external one. Buy a few of the inner ones and chuck them out when they get mouldy.
Or have a screen fitted!

Spray vinegar on as soon as you see pink mold, leave for a few minutes and give it a wipe (vinegar kills mold and the smell disappears quite quickly). And, when you do wash it add a cup of vinegar to the rinse.

We have an annoying glass panel now, bane of my life, but whenever we had a curtain we always had an inner one, and then a pretty one on the outside. Wash inner one.

Sorry for being thick, but don't double curtains stick to each other and get mouldy anyway? (I lived in the US and had a plastic shower liner and an outer fabric curtain, but it was easier to find double curtain rings there that would keep the two apart.)

No, it has been fine. But maybe use vinegar or soda crystals instead?

I now soak the bottom of mine in a water/ bleach bucket for a couple of hours before putting them in the washing machine.

waltzingparrot · 21/01/2025 17:16

Every few weeks I wash the bottom of mine while I'm having a shower. Just use a bit of shower gel and rub it into the fabric and, rub fabric together and wash it off and leave it to hang free to dry so it's not stuck together or to the bath side. Never builds up any mould.

PVC goes just as mouldy if it isn't aired out - just like the others @BabCNesbitt

I have a clear plastic one as a liner that goes inside the bath then a nice patterned decorative one to match the bathroom on the outside. If I don't wash the 'liner' one regularly, it gets mouldy at the bottom where it sticks to the bath. The decorative one never goes mouldy.
