How do you stop the washing machine drawer going disgusting?

I've a Bosch washing machine with an automatic soap dispenser in the drawer. I was hoping if I used it, it wouldn't make the whole soap drawer channel go revolting. Didn't work and ever since I tried to clean it out, the sensor for the detergent level hasn't worked.

After washing, I always leave the drawer open but that hasn't helped (because there is always moisture from the detergent there?).

Is there a full proof way of ensuring it stays clean? Like never putting detergent in the drawer, only directly in the drum or something.

Do you use liquid or powder. My whole machine used to get manky really fast when I used liquid. Now I use powder and its fine. Probably give it a cleaning cycle every 6 months and give the drawn and seals a clean every 3.

I use a cap of Dettol laundry sanitizer in every wash, makes a massive difference! I don’t get a dirty dispenser drawer or smelly machine any more.

Just take the drawer out and give it a soak and a scrub from time to time. That's what I do. I also use laundry sanitizer and find it helps.

I don't put detergent in the drawer. I use a little cup thing, fill it and put it directly on top of the clothes in the drum.

Once a month I clean out the drum and seal, remove the drawer and clean it thoroughly and the area of the machine it sits in. I also drain the water from the bottom and clean out the filter. Then I put it on a drum clean cycle.

Put powder in the drum before the clothes. The washing machine fills from the bottom up so dissolves the powder better.

Don't use the drawer.

Use powder only, and take out the drawer after every use, wash it, and leave it out until time for the next wash.

DelilahBucket · 12/01/2025 19:47

Also second using powder. I also run a Dettol washing machine cleaner wash every few months to keep everything clean inside.

I take the drawer out and put it in the dishwasher every couple of months. I wipe the area that the drawer fits in with a damp cloth with a bit of dettol on it, before putting the drawer back.

Just take the drawer out and give it a soak and a scrub from time to time.
Thats why the sensor no longer works - and how I found out you're not supposed to wash it!

I use a liquid detergent. Is powder really better?

I used to get a bit of water left in the drawer. Since I've started emptying it after every wash the mould and gunk has massively reduced.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 12/01/2025 20:32

Lucky ol' me!
I don't bother with those new-fangled drawer things.
It's down to the lavoir (as the French would say) for me and smack the clothes on the stone kerb. No residue (no drawer!) and every thing comes out foamy-free, if not a bit thread-bare and knackered (as the Germans would say).
Give it a go, and it's greener! (if you ignore the cost of replacement clothing fron China).

Soontobe60 · 12/01/2025 20:45

The most effective way of preventing a build up of gunk / mould / smells in the washing machine is to run a boil wash once a week. An engineer told me this, along with always use powder, never use liquid or softener. I give my towels a boil wash weekly and since doing so have never had a problem.

strawbearing · 12/01/2025 20:48

I put zoflora in once a week, and take the draw out once a month, give it a good scrub and bleach in the sink plus scrub out the hole when the drawer is out.

Notdoingthatno · 12/01/2025 20:49

Powder directly in the drum.
