G Plan sofas are pretty high off the ground and firm. It took us a long time looking around furniture shops to find something where you weren't basically sitting on the ground.

Yes this is what I'm talking about it's strange, my partner is 6ft+ and our sofa he looks so uncomfortable because it's so low, it never used to be like that with furniture

No, I still find most furniture a bit too tall.

Too much to hope they've resized things a bit to better fit the average human than the average male.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/01/2025 23:43

Thinking about it, we got a new suite recently from a small company which gave us control over height and also seat depth - I've now got an armchair which both I and my dd find comfortable for reading in as our feet can reach the floor when we're sitting in it properly. Maybe you need to get something bespoke but on the big size for your DH? One size really doesn't fit all.

Soonenough · 12/01/2025 23:46

I think houses are smaller and furniture is made to fit . And slouchy couches , etc seem to be in fashion.

MyDeepZebra · 12/01/2025 23:47

I agree. I have mobility problems as do family members and low sofas, beds etc a real issue these days.

And toilets...when/why did they get so low?!

Throwingpots · 13/01/2025 00:14

I have the opposite problem, being 5'4" a lot of furniture is too high for me. Are you quite tall op?

RampantIvy · 13/01/2025 00:15

Our beds are quite high as we have underbed storage.

anibendod · 13/01/2025 18:32

it's not just you OP, seems to be a real trend with chairs and sofas in particular

HolidayAtNight · 14/01/2025 15:19

Hmm yeah, if you go to a house that hasn't been redecorated in a few decades, the sinks and loos seem a bit higher too. I wonder why?

Comedycook · 14/01/2025 15:20

Yes I agree with you totally op

dottyaboutstripes · 14/01/2025 15:22

I don't agree at all but maybe that's because I'm only 5ft 1? I have to literally climb into bed as it's so high and it took a long time to find a sofa when we last bought one though I guess that was more to do with them being so deep

okright · 14/01/2025 15:23

Omg yes!

AuntieGrizelda · 14/01/2025 15:44

My son has one of the low corner sofas. It is a nightmare. I'm not tall but I'm getting on a bit and find it hard to get in and out of. My tall DH also struggles. You might as well be sitting on the floor.

I also think they look out of proportion, height wise, with most rooms - IYSWIM

A while ago we inherited a sofa which was quite low. It had square short modern legs. I replaced the low legs with some higher legs off the internet. We also put a block of wood underneath in the middle to give some extra strength and support

I don't really understand why they are making toilets lower. My elderly mum (RIP) fell trying to sit on one of these.

Funnily enough, only yesterday my DH was trying to find an armchair for a tall person. The one he has got is quite high but he says he needs his legs to bend at the knees properly when he is sitting on it. Any recommendations welcome. He is 6'3"

Ted27 · 14/01/2025 15:50

I've just had a new bathroom and have a 'comfort' height toilet
Very nice

Mirenamirena · 14/01/2025 15:51

@ErrolTheDragon What company did you use for your suite please? I have short legs and they often dangle because the seat is too high and deep for me.

I do have a Halo “Little Professor” chair which is just perfect for my diddy legs and small rooms 😊

PickAChew · 14/01/2025 15:51

I have quite short legs and prefer one of our toilets over the other precisely because it is low. It's hard on my knees when they're stiff, first thing but it's just a much better position for emptying myself properly! I used to have to put my feet on one of those kiddy step stools when we only had a taller one.

Floralnomad · 14/01/2025 15:53

Depends what you buy , I’m 5’8” and I don’t drop down onto my bed , it’s literally at sitting height .

anniegun · 14/01/2025 15:54

It felt that way when you were younger, because as a child you were smaller

It's a small company local to us called James and Rose. I think there are quite a few such companies around the country. Apart from being able to specify sizes they have a massive range of fabrics.

I'm only 5foot now and still feel like furniture is very small

I think the same about beds , I keep looking for one that's quite a nice size off the floor but they all seem so low
