Is 1600 spin too aggressive for a wash?

Just moved into a new build and the washing machine defaults on a lot of programmes to 1600 spin...sounds quite aggressive when it's spinning, my last house the washing machine we had only went up to 1200.

OH says her tights are coming up in holes quite a bit and I'm wondering if it's as a result of the more aggressive spin on the clothes...basically, what spin should I be putting on? Is 1600 to aggressive really despite being the default?

I wouldn’t use that for my clothes - maybe towels or quilts/mats.

I often turn spin down to 400 and do two short spin/rinse, I find even 800 or 1200 can be too harsh.

We'll it's not good for delicate items like tights or knitted things. They'd likely snag if they're put in a mixed load anyway, regardless of spin speed. Put things like that in a net bag on a delicates cycle which will give less agitation and a slower spin. But for towels, bedding etc 1600 is fine.

Do you use a lingerie bag?
My machine has a 1600 spin and never noticed any issues. I don't often wash tights though, but everything else seems to come out fine.

Can't you manually change the speed?

Oh what! I always use a 1600- this could explain a lot.

The higher the better IMO. I’ve had 1800 and there are 2400 independent spin dryers for sale. The spin is only that fast at the end of the process. And it means your clothes dry faster and you have less condensation if you dry indoors.
If you think about it, the clothes stay in one position and the drum spins so there’s no friction involved.
I imagine the tights are getting knotted up or damaged by zips etc.

I use a 1600 spin for everything but delicates and have never had any damage.

I would class tights as delicates though, and I'd do them on a delicates wash with a low spin speed.

I use 1600 for everything except delicates and wool. The wool setting is 1200 on ours.

its great as everything dries much quicker

I think the wash programme and the tumbling things about would cause more snagging than spinning.

dementedpixie · 11/01/2025 12:22

Most of my washing programmes default to 1400rpm. I can use 1600rpm but only use it on a few wash loads e.g. towels or bedding

Seeline · 11/01/2025 12:28

I find the higher spins makes everything more creased. I don't have a tumble dryer though which may help remove the worst creases.

Doggymummar · 11/01/2025 12:30

1200 is the highest on my machine and it seems fine. I never realised that there was a higher one than that.
