How do you clean your shower?

When I do mine it feels like a lot of effort but not that much cleaner in the end. We also live in a hard water area and the build up on the glass is impossible to shift now, even with products specifically meant for removing it.

Is there a trick I'm missing??

Do you remove the water off the sides every time you have a shower? If not I would start by doing this, it stops the stains from building up on the glass making overall cleaning easier.

I clean mine when I'm in it. We don't have a screen so it's just tiles ( have a curtain which I wash from time to time) Unless there's any mould, a regular scrub with a microfibre cloth or a scouring sponge, and soap, does the trick. I just do a few tiles at a time. It's a Flylady method.

Yes this too. Get the worst of the drips off with one of those rubber scraper things, then a towel to wipe it dry ( I then mop floor with same towel before bunging it in the wash)

The glass screen (walk in shower)
Soaking wet (dripping) with hot water, microfiber cloth with a really good squeeze of washing up liquid.
Sqidge the cloth so it's foamy.
Rub over glass, really get it soapy, you can feel the soap scum, keep rubbing until smooth.
Don't rinse, wipe off soap suds with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
Works for me every time

Thank you everyone! We do wipe the water off but the build up was there when we moved in so it does feel a bit pointless now. Will persevere with it though.

Thanks for the tips!

White vinegar will remove existing limescale. Then squeegee after use and spray with shower shine. I like either Mr Muscle or Ocado own brand.

StripeyBedSocks · 06/01/2025 07:28

We had build up on a shower screen, pink stuff paste worked on it, just put on with a cloth then rinse got it in B&M

Anonym00se · 06/01/2025 07:33

I’ve got a Karcher window vac that I use on the shower screen every time I shower. It takes literally a few seconds, but the screen looks like new after two years.

Viakal may help.

SiriusTheCatStar · 06/01/2025 11:05

Aurikatariina has good advice on her social media channels for getting rid of a build up of lime scale. From memory, I didn't follow her method to the letter but I applied lemon juice to the shower screen and covered it with cling film so that it doesn't dry out while the acid breaks down the layer of grease from shower gel etc. I used washing up liquid to rinse the lemon juice and grease layer. Then I used Viakal to act on the limescale. Still needed a lot of elbow grease to scour it off. You could also use one of those razor blades for removing paint from glass.

I didn't damage anything in the bathroom I was tackling but I didn't have to worry about marble tiles or anything like that.

GreatPlumPlayer · 06/01/2025 11:06

With a shit load of limescale remover. I get star drops and use a sponge to really scrub it. I miss living in a soft water area.

Comedycook · 06/01/2025 11:08

We also live in a hard water area...it's a nightmare! I agree it's a huge amount of effort for little reward. I can't even properly dry the shower screens with a window vac because the shower doors are curved so it's tricky. Sorry I don't actually have a solution...I'm still searching for one

chattyness · 06/01/2025 11:15

Washing up liquid and a sponge or cloth, then rinsed and dried works on our glass screens .I only need to do it once a week as I rinse and squeegee with the karcher vac after our daily showers but there's only two of us using it so not much build up really.

User12385359 · 06/01/2025 11:23

I use Flash bathroom spray and a scrubbing brush on the tiles because I’ve got textured tiles in the shower enclosure which are hard to clean with a cloth. Viakal on the shower fittings as they’re chrome, and to clean the glass shower screen I use a Dishmatic half filled with white vinegar and half washing up liquid, then rinse and squeegee. Flash spray and a cloth to wipe the shower tray.

Butthistimesticktoit · 06/01/2025 11:26

Any recommendations for a great scrubbing brush? I bought one but it’s so stiff it’s a bit pointless!

OP I think viakal and cling film would probably be your best option!

Viakal is your best friend

CrotchetyQuaver · 06/01/2025 11:55

Viakal and I now go over that with a battery scrubber thingy (hand arthritis so my hands struggle with tasks like this now) then rinse off and wipe dry. If it's been there for years then it may take a few goes to get it looking really good again, but it will.

It is a nightmare. Even just doing the washing up leaves calcium deposits on our dishes sometimes.

Viakal added to my shop! Thanks everyone

White vinegar spray is in my experience far more effective than Viakal - needs to sit for 10 mins or so before vigorous scrub and rinse

Chocolately · 06/01/2025 12:22

I use a dish brush on my shower and viakal.
Did read recently about half a lemon dipped in salt for the shower screen, will give that a go.

Reallybadidea · 06/01/2025 12:30

We had a water softener installed at the same time as having the bathroom fitted. Honestly, it's absolutely amazing. No limescale at all, I wouldn't be without it. Not ridiculously expensive at all considering the difference it's made to the amount of time spent cleaning.

smooththecat · 06/01/2025 12:30

I’ve got a glass scraper as well as the viakal

Ilovemyshed · 06/01/2025 12:32

Short term: a non scratch scouring pad and viakal spray to remove the worst. You may need to repeat a few times.

Daily, shower spray and squeegee off, weekly deep clean with Flash spray, spray on, leave a bit, scour off.

Long term - get a water softener. Either a full on salt one, or if that is not feasible, a magnetic one, which work reasonably well.

Ariela · 06/01/2025 13:44

Get a water softener, and you'll have far less of an issue with shower glass water marks
