Me too! My Direct Debits have been upped from £25 to £50 for both!

If you change supplier using the Quidco www.quidco.com/ website, you'll get cash back. You could use that cash to pay off what you owe. It is worth doing, though it depends on how your current supplier compares with others.

Well, it's basically going to run out at some point isn't it. Oil I mean, which will mean we all have to start thinking about what the next generation is going to do.

Nagapie · 03/05/2008 13:20

Wasn't NPower on BBCWatchdog for dodgy pricing strategies - overcharging due to dodgy ways of working out fuel costs???

Are your bills using estimated or actual meter readings??

VanillaPumpkin · 03/05/2008 13:38

We have just switched to Eon. In theory we will save over £20 a month. Who knows. It was quite easy to switch though. We did it via comparison site and all we have had to do is give them new readings.
We owed £114 on the gas though but were oddly £115 in credit on the electricity. All the bills will be sorted by the end of this month and the switch became effective the middle of last month so not too much messing about.
I would def compare on uswitch or similar.

hi

well when i changed to npower last yr they were the cheapest.

Have had a look again, fo rmy area and atlantic someone or other could save me about £100 a yr now.

I have been paying by quarterly bills, but the comparison site reckoned I could save 3173 a yr WITH Npower if (who I am with) if I change to monthly dd.

I am sure that can't be right on mere savings, iyswim. Perhaps they are trying to lure people in, as I belive they offer a saving of £80 off your bill after a yr or something.

I will check out quidco, thanks for the tip.

btw, i have my heating on for about 5 hrs a day, and cook too (if u can cal it that) and my last bill was £150 for gas, and thats me and dd6 in a little 2bed place.

We're on LPG and it's a bomb.

Scottish HydroElectric for power, though, and it's not too bad. About £90/quarter.

To fill about 80% of that tank, however, about £400.

Needs topped up every 2.5 months or so.

Not pleasant.

We're going to have to really freeze this winter and I wish the wood fireplace hadn't been removed.

piratecat · 03/05/2008 14:36

expat I was on oil tank in my last place. To fill the 1000litre tank back in 2002 was about £120, when I left there in 2005 it was 3 times that.

Its a bloody rip off. I am going to have toseriously and consiously think about our consumption.

My water is bloody £35 a month too.

ILiveinhope · 03/05/2008 14:39

Expat,

Do you spend over 10% of your income on fuel bills cox if you do Hydro has a scheme to help. I can't remember the name of it, but I can get you the info on Monday if you liked. You just call and they can sort it out for you. I remember you talking about o nanother thread a couple of weeks ago

expatinscotland · 03/05/2008 14:39

there's no mains gas out here and this home is rented, so there's no way round the LPG.

our neighbours have electric storage heating, and they say it's cheaper.

but it's not our choice to make and i'll bet it's dear to change the heating over.

we're supplied by Calor. there are other suppliers, but Calor also owns the tank and assess a tank standing charge, too, so i'm not sure how it would work if you changed.

at any rate, our landlord would have to agree.

CrackerOfNuts · 03/05/2008 14:39

I am with Npower for my electric, and last quarterly bill for 4 bed house was £175.

My gas is with Southern electric, but is on a prepayment meter. I put between £10-£15 a week on that.

expatinscotland · 03/05/2008 14:40

ScottishPower was charging us £110/month for a 2bed, 2nd floor flat that was warm as toast.

They're rip off merchants.

piratecat · 03/05/2008 14:42

bloody hellfire, that ridiculous.

oh god i just wanna live in a shack on a beach in a hot climate.

We were paying £50 per month for electricity and £20 per month for gas with NPower. We are now paying £45 per month for both with Eon. Both DH and I feel this will not be enough so we will be monitoring our readings closely. It is all going to be done online so is the lowest rate apparently .
