Yellowing sheets - tried a method and it's amazing

It's a known recommendation that is often given as a method to get rid of yellowing on bedding: rub in a paste made of soda crystals and water.

I always felt skeptical about this but tried it out the other day and it worked SO well. I shook over the soda crystals, dribbled on some water, and massaged this into the fabric before leaving an hour.

Just felt the need to share as yellowing has bugged me for ages and I didn't think there would be such an easy way out of it!

This is great actually, thank you.

I will try it on a white shirt I like!

Is soda crystals the same as bicarbonate of soda? I'd like to try this, thanks!!

No it's not. Very different. You can find it in the cleaning section. It is brilliant for all sorts of jobs

Vanish works for us

It's good stuff, just make sure you read the warnings on the packet and wear gloves to protect your skin.

Oneearringlost · 20/12/2024 06:28

Soda crystals are amazing! Any burnt on food on pans, and it's magic, so, so much better than long overnight soaking with washing up liquid.

I use bluing powder, which is made from baking soda and Prussian blue pigment. It seems to work, and is similar to a product my DM used in the old days. You just put a teaspoon full in the final rinse water.

ScottBakula · 20/12/2024 06:49

Perhaps not the best time of year for this but bright sun also helps so sitck your yellowish stuff on the line

Ihavearedbag · 20/12/2024 06:53

Soda crystals in the wash also totally remove stink from gym kit

What brand of bluing powder please @ForGreyKoala ?

Hohofortherobbers · 20/12/2024 08:07

How long did it take you to rub a paste into a sheet??!

Oh sorry, I don't live in the UK so it won't be much use to you.

Reallybadidea · 20/12/2024 20:42

I just tip some soda crystals into the sink, fill with hot water and leave the item to soak for a while. I give it a bit of a stir round occasionally and then wash as normal. Bit less faffy than making a paste IMHO.

I wasn't really sure of the chemistry but it's Soda Crystals by Dri-Pack; green bag. You get them in the washing section. I agree about wearing gloves - found that out the hard way but it wasn't catastrophic; I just got very dry hands - they give off a slight ammonia smell.

I add them to every wash anyway, to condition the machine, but thought I would try this suggestion for once, as I'd read it many times and always wondered how it would help. But for me, it really did the trick! I'd be interested to hear if anyone else doing it notices the same.

It was my DS's pillow - I will have to up the frequency of his bedding washes now, as he's a greasy haired teen. When I stripped the bed last time there was a definite area of discolouration in the centre of the pillowcase 🤢

@Reallybadidea thanks - I'll do that for bigger things. Making the paste by sprinkling water and then crystals was easier than doing it on the side and smearing over, but it would be hard for sheets.

I kind of folded it over on itself and did it. Harder but not too bad. I rubbed in and under the folds for about 2 mins?
