How to tip the binman?

Hi,
My first year living in a place with bins per house (previously was communal) so need to tip.

How do you do it, given they come round at 6am? Do you wake up early and hover around? I'm obviously not going to leave cash on my bin overnight so i'm stumped

I leave a bottle of wine/pack of lager/box of chocs on the bin with a Christmas card. If I’m feeling flush I might add in a fiver. Every year I do this for the binmen, milkman and postie. I do it because my mum did it! They’re hard jobs and this is my way of showing my appreciation for a year’s good service.

JC03745 · 19/12/2024 20:49

OP- why don't you ask a neighbour or friend to put your bins out when you are away, rather than hope the binmen retrieve it from within your property and put it back?

No- I've never tipped them. They've thrown the food caddy on the ground breaking the handle, their bin lorry backed into my drive and cracked both recycling boxes and our council make us pay for replacements! 😡

Arlanymor · 19/12/2024 20:50

Lots of councils don’t let them take money. We give a tub of Quality Street (with an envelope with money inside). I get up to give it to them.

I usually leave £100 in £20 notes balanced inside the top of my wheelie bin. Hopefully they find it before they get emptied.

Seriously?!

BalladOfBarry · 19/12/2024 20:54

I tip the binmen, both general waste and garden waste teams.

Also the postie and the ocado delivery person.

I appreciate them and am happy to go over and slip them some cash at Christmas.

I would hate to work outdoors in all weather.

Justkeeprollingalong · 19/12/2024 21:03

@neverknowinglyunreasonable
I agree with @misssunshine4040
SERIOUSLY???

Icepinkeskimo · 19/12/2024 21:04

Yes of course I tip the bin men and give them a gift. It’s always appreciated, they do a great job. I’d hate to be that holier than thou, mean spirited person, sneering it’s their job!
What a miserable way to view people.

TammyJones · 19/12/2024 21:06

I will tip to Tesco delivery guy this Saturday
Years ago I used to tip the bin men but haven't for years.

TotallyTwisted · 19/12/2024 21:07

HomeCookingWannabe · 19/12/2024 20:41

@Pinkissmart you've misunderstood. The council-determined requirement is for households to put their bin by the curb ready for the binmen. The binmen are not responsible for walking all the way down my driveway to collect it. So if i'm not there to bring it to curb, technically it wouldn't get collected, and they are within their rights not to do so. If I can encourage them to collect from within my property then it's of significant benefit to me

Yeah, they won't do this no matter how much you tip them. 🙄

AlbertCamusflage · 19/12/2024 21:08

I'm seriously worrying now about those £20 notes. Hopefully you at least put them in the recycling bin? Such a shame if they end up in landfill.

The bin lorry enjoys eating that money every year. What?!

OldJohn · 19/12/2024 21:12

My wife is disabled and once I was 77 the council told the binmen to take out our bin every week.
I left an envelope with a Christmas card containing £20 half in the lid of the wheelie bin

HomeCookingWannabe · 19/12/2024 21:18

@JC03745 my neighbours are all v old (like in 80s) so i dont like to ask them to go out in cold weather/ at night. They put them back for me in the morning though, and when i'm home I put all of theirs out to save them having to go out

@TotallyTwisted They do 😁 Just not every time. Anyway, I wouldn't dream of not tipping, as others have said. This post is about the best way to.

@LittleRedRidingHoody I'm just home from being away and about to tape a "please knock" note on the bin. Thankyou for this, I think it's the best answer 👍

Don't give them money. If you feel compelled to give them money for some weird reason, give them a tenner at most. Give them a tub of Roses - £6 and shareable.

Sparxdislike · 19/12/2024 21:24

I gave them a big box of posh biscuits :)

HomeCookingWannabe · 19/12/2024 21:24

@MyrtleStrumpet They are coming at 6am tomorrow and I have nothing giftable in the house (other than the perfume set i bought myself and im not sure thats what they'd like 😂) so cash it is, but will consider something less crass for next year

No one is sneering. It's not the same job as it was in days gone by.
They get well paid, good hours and conditions- times have moved on and there are far more worthy workers to tip

roses2 · 19/12/2024 20:24

Mine ring the doorbell every year. Sometimes give them a few bottles of wine so they have enough to share between the 3 of them, not every year. Had the same bin men every week for many years in London.

Edited

They ring the doorbell?? What do they say when you open the door?

HomeCookingWannabe · 19/12/2024 21:27

@Comff I'm expecting to say "merry Christmas" and had them an envelope with cash in it. I mean, they know the score, they won't think I'm inviting them round for a cuppa!

HomeCookingWannabe · 19/12/2024 20:07

@Oneearringlost mad isnt it, I would have thought couple of hundred but if you think they only need 100 houses to give a tenner each so it's not unreasonable

Ohhh! I thought the council gave it to them!😆

HomeCookingWannabe · 19/12/2024 21:30

@Oneearringlost No sorry, he just mentioned in passing as he knows its more than most would have guessed, and ofc relative to salary is pretty decent

Don't answer the door. Don't give them money. It's like begging! You coyote be working away from home.

HomeCookingWannabe · 19/12/2024 21:39

@MyrtleStrumpet I'm going to leave them a note saying "please knock" as leaving cash out overnight is not a good idea I don't think
