Lemongrass essential oil

Hi there.
My hoover smelled so I vacuumed up baking soda + lemongrass essential oil however the bottle spilled so it was more like 22-25 drops then 2/3. Now the whole house reeks of lemongrass oil. I've opened windows and put air purifier on to try get rid of the smell. Any tips of getting rid of it?
More importantly. We also have a 3 month old baby and a dog - should we get them out of the house, is it toxic?
Thanks

Hi, OP. We saw you didn't get any responses to this on the Health board, so we've moved it to the Housekeeping board now, to see if anyone has any ideas here.

I would definitely keep them off the floor where lemongrass has been - it is toxic. Probably not at this level, but you don't want them licking it from paws or hands - at best it can cause skin irritation. If you have a steam cleaner I'd be tempted to do a serious steam clean on surfaces it has been on - that will lift most of it in the vapour. It'll smell strong again, but most will be off the floor.

PS If it's just the smell that worries you, boil some vinegar. That'll get rid of the smell.

I don't know about the toxicity but oil is oil. I'd rub washing up liquid into it, leave for a good half an hour, loosen with some water then blot, rewet, blot to try to rinse out the soap. You could also try a carpet spot cleaner - they must have detergent to help break down the oil - or carpet cleaning machine if you have one.

It’s just the immediate area. I agree with the above - dishwashing liquid and warm water. Blot with paper towels. It’s also likely to be fairly “surface” rather than deep if it was just in the bicarb.

Sorry I misread it as a spillage on the floor. If it's just inside the vacuum then honestly I have no idea. I'd start by washing out any removable bits, including the hose, with soap, and changing the filters and bags.

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for these replies.

The smell has thankfully disappeared - I removed the hoover (replaced bag and will leave the hose outside for a few days for the oil to vaporise). I also ventilated the area, used an air purifier and put out a big bowl of vinegar which apparently absorbs the smell. Worked a treat! Also used dish soap and lots of hot water on the spot.

To be safe keeping our dog and baby out of the area for a few days!

Thanks 🙏
