Where can I sell nice furniture

hello57906478 · 10/12/2024 15:10

I am unexpectedly moving abroad and have quite few moderately expensive furniture pieces to sell and an expensive American fridge freezer that is only 2 years old. All the furniture is in immaculate condition hence I am reluctant to use Facebook marketplace as I won’t even get a third of the price I paid for it on there. Does anyone know of any other websites or perhaps companies I can use? Maybe some home staging companies ? Thanks

33% of the purchase price sounds about right for a 2year old fridge-freezer. Why do you think it's worth more?

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 10/12/2024 15:52

If it’s desirable vintage furniture, e.g. mid-century modern, then you need to go to a specialist dealer locally. Look on Instagram, etc. EBay also worth a try.

But to be honest, if it’s John Lewis sofas and dining sets, a third of original is a decent price for selling second hand.

hello57906478 · 10/12/2024 15:53

I don’t think a fridge freezer that is in perfect condition that was worth over £1000 is now worth £300 just because it’s second hand

Second hand furniture really isn’t worth much

How long will you be away?
Is it worth leaving it in storage?

I’d be amazed if you get more than £150-£200 for it

DownThePubWithStevieNicks · 10/12/2024 15:53

Your stuff is worth what people are willing to pay.

FridayNight1975 · 10/12/2024 15:56

I would try Gumtree, as most people search locally and would be happy to come and collect.

but be prepared to hear from people with an offer and telling you they’re coming tomorrow only to never hear from them again (I’ve had this even with items that I offered free).

you could get the odd good one though, I’ve sold a few things successfully there, but you’ll have to develop thick skin.

good luck

I know it's a bitter pill to swallow, but most people want a new fridge! If they get a second hand one it's because they're skint. People don't want the risk of it breaking or being duff, as they would have no come back.

TTPDTS · 10/12/2024 15:58

Honestly the depreciation of goods like homewared is really significant in the first few years! Similar to cars, they drop lots of £££ the second they're classed as used.

30-40% sounds about right for a 2 year old fridge, furniture could be less depending on the age.

Thanks. I already had offers in the region of £500 for it

lakesiders · 10/12/2024 16:00

Why didn't you accept 500 quid? How much do you want for it?

hello57906478 · 10/12/2024 16:02

we Would want over £700 for it as otherwise we might as well move it with us (which is costly but worth it if loosing so much on it)

JollyHollyMe · 10/12/2024 16:02

Impossible to move an American fridge without specialist equipment and a van

Autumn1990 · 10/12/2024 16:05

I’d take the £500 offer as it’s a good offer. £20-40 is standard for appliances second hand where I live and other furniture is frequently given away. I’ve an antique pine dresser that was free

Haha! Nobody in their right mind is going to pay that for a two year old fridge who’s former owner has skipped the country.

£500 is an amazing offer you should bite their hand off

It will cost you more than that to ship it probably and depending on where you are moving too it might not work there anyway

I moved overseas and had to sell everything and it was heartbreaking seeing everything go for such a small amount of money

Floralnomad · 10/12/2024 16:07

You should have taken the £500 , it amazes me what some people think people are going to spend on used goods .

Afraid so. For example, here is an LG american style fridge freezer that would have cost well over £1,000 new being offered on ebay with the highest bid so far being £250. It's just 14 months old.

Or this Samsung one offered for £280 ono

LG American Fridge/Freezer - Smart Fridge - Silver (GSLD80PZRF) 8806091431134 | eBay

It has a side-by-side door style and a freestanding installation. The fridge has a capacity of 699L and is frost-free with an automatic defrost function. It also features an adjustable thermostat, fast cool function, and a water dispenser.

It’s worth what someone is willing to pay. I think 1/3 of the price is generous. I doubt you will get more than that.

PineappleCoconut · 10/12/2024 16:11

£500 is an amazing offer for a second hand fridge probably nearing end of warranty, take it quick.

Furniture isn't worth what you think it is.

Try an auction house, and see what selling prices they suggest, then take off their fees, & vat. And if it's anywhere near your figures I'd be surprised.

It's very depressing.
But does mean next time you move you know you if you don't insist on buying new you can get some lovely items very cheaply.

SoloSofa24 · 10/12/2024 16:20

Unless your furniture is a type of antique currently in demand, or is a style from a seriously designer brand still in production (eg Ligne Roset, Eames etc), I think you are going to have to adjust your expectations. If it is just nice stuff from normal but quite pricy brands it loses at least half its value as soon as it is out of the showroom.

Vinterior seems to have rather overpriced furniture, so you could give that a try, but if you have a hard deadline for getting rid of things before a move, you would do better putting it on Gumtree at a realistic price.

Propertyshmoperty · 10/12/2024 16:42

I would have also accepted the £500.. why on Earth would someone pay 30% off for a 2 year old fridge with no guarantee, no warranty and a seller who's leaving the country so no recourse if it's a lemon. You get better deals than that during the January sales!

I had a second hand fridge once and it turned out the top of the fridge didn't get cold, luckily it was only £50 and the freezer still worked. It's currently in my garage as extra freezer space and a glorified overflow canned drinks fridge.

I'm genuinely amazed that you were offered that much for it, and I think you should have bitten their hands off. I don't know anyone who would pay even close to £500 for a non-warrantied second hand fridge freezer.

Round my way, if you can get rid of them at all, second hand white goods (regardless of age/brand/condition) won't attract more than a low ball £50-100 offer. People with money to spend want new with warranties. The only people buying second hand are those who can't afford new.

Second hand furniture again - mostly can't be given away, but you might find someone to offer you £50 for something they can make use of.

Snoken · 10/12/2024 16:50

Definitely take the £500 for the fridge! I sold my Smeg fridge/freezer when I relocated 3 years ago. I think I had paid £2200 for it and got £750, it was also about 2 years old. White goods don't have a long lifespan anymore so once it's 2 years old it has probably only got 3-5 years left and it will be without warranty.
