Bathroom with no windows - how to manage

Does anyone successfully manage to keep a bathroom with no window free of mould/generally healthy? Looking at a house and the housebuilder obviously tried to get as many houses in as possible to this is a result. Expensive city, lots wanting housing. It's not brand new, it's a few years old.

Thanks for any advice.

I'm assuming it has an extractor fan to the outside? Change for a continually running one with a humidistat to kick in when you shower?

@AnOldCynic Thank you, I didn't know such things existed. I think I would put something like that in to control it the best way I could.

No window and been here 24years. No mould in bathroom as we put the extractor fan on.

Mine is like this. I love it. No cold, draughty window in winter.

We have a fan that comes on when the light comes on (but you can get automatic ones that are better - they come on when they sense the air is bad or humid.

We also run a dehumidifier after showering.

We have a bathroom with no window. We changed the extractor fan for an inline extractor fan which is installed in the loft which is much more powerful than the old fan we had and a lot quieter. We don’t have any mold problems.

Thanks - re the dehumidifier, is it a floor standing one that you plug in outside the bathroom? Or is it a specific bathroom one?

Thankyou - looks like there are a few solutions to this so i should not let it be a deal breaker!

We have a plug socket just outside of the bathroom door. We plug it in there and place it inside.

Our ensuite doesn't have a window. I leave the extractor fan running for quite a while after using the shower and it's absolutely fine.

MarvelJesus · 28/11/2024 17:49

We simply ran the extractor fan for longer than you think you need to after a shower or bath, and because it wasn’t on an outside wall, the room never got cold and damp enough to ever get mouldy.

TwistedSisters · 28/11/2024 18:12

Same as others - ours has got a powerful extractor and we leave that on for quite a while after showering. The heated towel rail also helps. No mould.

Neither of my bathrooms have a window. I have no mould in my bathrooms. As others have said. Extractor fans, I keep the door open to the rest of the house and my bedroom window is left open with other windows having the vent open. I have no problems with mould.

JC03745 · 09/12/2024 11:35

I previously lived in a flat for 20yrs which had no bathroom window. Never had issues with damp or mould in the bathroom! I thought legally they need an extractor fan though, so there should be one already. The door was kept open when not in use though.

IF you change it or have one running constantly, check the dB levels. In the day, it would be fine, but at night, the constant whirring might be a PITA. At another property, a semi, the neighbours complained that they could hear our extractor fan from our bathroom!

With a good extractor you’ll be fine and leave it running (usually by leaving the light on) for a good long while after a shower. We have windows in the bathrooms in our house now which I don’t ever open in winter because can’t abide a chilly bathroom, but didn’t in our 2 previous properties, and never had mould pr damp I’d also recommend either an electric or dual fuel heated towel rail so you can get your towels dry even when the heating isn’t on, and a heated mirror so that it doesn’t get steamed up. Agree with PP to check the extractor’s db level too, since it’ll be running a fair bit, it’ll be really annoying if it’s too noisy.
