Eye level oven without slide

Is this a total no no? Just designing our new kitchen and the price difference between the hide and slide and normal ones is quite big. But would it be completely awkward to try and open/get into the oven at that height with the door in the way? Does anyone have an oven like this? Thank you!

good lord no Op

youll open it and the blast of hot air in the face

no, will look peculiar if nothing else

I've always had ovens like this, works for me. No need for slide and hide.

ReginaPhalange92 · 30/10/2024 15:29

We had an eye level oven with normal door years back, it was fine.

Oldraver · 30/10/2024 15:48

Well I think only one brand has a hide and slide so all the others manage.

I did look at this but the hide and slide bit takes up room so we decided against it ( though would of been and under counter position

Have a look on the Miele website, even if you don't use this brand you will see how they fit

Ours is fine. I actually find it really useful to put trays on the door to swivel them and put them back in.

Surely you get a blast of hot air in the face with an eye level oven, no matter how the door opens?

I have an eye level oven with no slidey door and it enrages me.

I'm not sure if it's because i'm short (5'2) so it's just an awkward height for me/my torso? But I hate it!

StamppotAndGravy · 30/10/2024 16:00

We do. We're both quite tall though so can reach over the door easily. I like it because it stops you accidentally dripping lasagne on your toes. It feels safer with a toddler around too.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 30/10/2024 16:52

We had one years ago I was fine as I'm tall. My mum if she was over couldn't uses it, she's 5ft

Magpiemayhem · 30/10/2024 17:28

I really, really hoping people would tell me it would be fine so I don't have to fork out 😂 thank you Mumsnet! Husband and I are both tall so hopefully we will manage ok.

Which bit do you mean is eye level ? The top of the oven (which is just standard oven height) or the actual door opens at head height? Quick look at John Lewis website using eye level as search term just shows what I would think of as normal fitted ovens which have been used for ages with no issue. I think the slide doors are probably great if you have a narrow galley kitchen or are very feeble (would have helped my mum with Parkinson’s for example) but the vast majority of people manage with ordinary doors.

Magpiemayhem · 30/10/2024 20:48

I've probably used the wrong term, I've no idea what they're called. I've always had a freestanding oven that I have to bend down to use. Our new kitchen has an integrated oven which is higher up so no bending down. Not sure what the correct term is!

I don't see how a sliding oven or otherwise makes any difference to hot air in your face.

Gazelda · 30/10/2024 22:01

I'm short. 5'3". My integrated eye level oven is the only thing I regret about our recent kitchen installation.

It's not the hot air in the face, it's the fact that I can't reach into the oven unless I stand to the side. So I'm putting trays in at an angle. And it's worse taking them out, particularly if it's a liquid or heavy.

TheHomeEdit · 30/10/2024 22:54

I think they just take getting used to (unless you are especially short like previous poster when the slide and hide door would help). I find the low freestanding ovens much more awkward than an integrated one - I am far more likely to drop tray / slop out liquid when bending down and then standing up holding hot trays. The integrated ones I just remove and then turn round and put down on work surface.
