Heat pump tumble dryer in outside unheated garage

House4DS · 21/10/2024 22:57

Hi
My tumble dryer has died.
Looking in Currys this evening, there were no vented models but they had heat-pump ones.
I've not come across these before.
Are they ok working at lower temperatures?(my garage mid winter can hover around zero).
Prices aren't much more than vented - about £70 more.
Are the electricity savings significant?
Thanks!

I got a vented on from Amazon

Catgotthecreamandthesalmon · 21/10/2024 23:17

No you can’t use them in unheated environments. An outside garage wouldn’t work. Get a condenser drier.

LaCerbiatta · 21/10/2024 23:22

Ours is outside, not a garage but the cupboard where the boiler is. So it's a bit warmer because of the boiler, but still gets really cold in the winter. It works fine🙂

FrogFairy · 22/10/2024 14:28

I just looked on argos and they sell three dryers that are “suitable for outbuildings” but they are all Miele and very expensive.

OnaBegonia · 22/10/2024 14:39

I've got a condenser, wouldn't be without it

Boopear · 22/10/2024 14:42

I have a condenser in a unheated outbuilding and it works fine. Had an engineer out yesterday about a (non mechanical) small fault and he said they actually work better in cooler air as the condensing is easier.

House4DS · 22/10/2024 16:28

Thanks all.
I possibly wasn't clear in my post - I can find a vented one, but the lack of vented in the shop made me look at the heat pump ones which I've not come across before.
I've had a regular condensing one and a vented one in the shed, both worked normally.
@LaCerbiatta is yours a heat pump one? Most of the year it's not freezing out there (like this soggy weekend when I really needed it and it packed up 🙄)

@LaCerbiatta thank you!

I know this thread is a few months old but I thought I would update. It's -2 outside here, been below freezing for days and I went to use my heat pump dryer today, it starts then shuts down with an error.

Clearly it finds the garage far too cold to function, along with the fridge in there which I've switched off.

Washing is now draped around the house on the radiators.

I hate HP dryers, they are slow, unreliable and shit. I am very sorely tempted to unplug it and buy a cheap vented one, I miss my vented dryer.

Fumnudge · 11/01/2025 17:54

Thanks for the update, it's good to know but sorry it's been a wasted purchase for you.

ExtraDisorganised · 11/01/2025 18:08

We didn't realise this when we bought ours, it was OK last winter because there were no sustained properly cold spells but we haven't been able to use it for the last few days, we are using a heated airer instead. We have a thermometer in the shed, it works ok above 5-6°C, no complaints about it otherwise and it is much cheaper to run than our old vented one.

House4DS · 11/01/2025 18:39

Just to update - I bought a heat pump and it's working really well.
Yes the cycles are long, but I knew that before buying.
It lives in the unheated shed and there has been no change to performance in this cold snap. I don't have the outlet attached to the drains, but just empty the collecting container.
I put it on at -3C last night, clothes perfectly dry this morning.
For those that are finding problems in the cold, have you hooked the outlet pipe up to the drain? I'm wondering if this would freeze (and so block) easily?

Oh, I might try it again then. I must admit my "doesn't work" experience was based on trying it once at 2° and it running but not getting things dry, it didn't actually refuse to work. We empty ours manually.

House4DS · 11/01/2025 22:49

@ExtraDisorganised I do find if I don't empty the water after each (larger) load, the next one doesn't dry so well. Hopefully it works again 🤞

ExtraDisorganised · 11/01/2025 22:53

Thanks, I'll try tomorrow. We empty it after every run (it's by the door so very easy) so unless one of the DCs forgot it shouldn't be that. Will report back.

ExtraDisorganised · 12/01/2025 15:27

Reporting back. Temp in garage was 1.2C. It worked, but the washing wasn’t quite as dry as normal, there was less water than you would expect in the tank. But dry enough. Definitely drier than last time. Phew. Glad I saw this thread Grin

I am thinking of purchasing this hotpoint cold guard heat pump dryer to keep in my unheated garage, any guidance plz, https://www.ao-business.com/product/chsd82mgguk-hotpoint-fabriccare-heat-pump-tumble-dryer-grey-106720-126.aspx

You can’t keep a heat pump drier in an unheated environment. They won’t work properly.

House4DS · 27/02/2026 14:12

@Bhuzone @Catgotthecreamandthesalmon
I'm the OP.
I bought the heat pump tumble dryer and it's been working fantastically ever since - that's 2 winters now, and it's kept in an unheated shed.
Perfectly dry clothes every time. I love it!

Yes, our Blomberg one has been fine in an unheated garage, as I posted last year it take a bit longer and perhaps not quite as dry on really cold days but still fine overall.

ChubbyPuffling · 27/02/2026 14:57

Can I just add that it is not worth buying appliance insurance when it is kept in an unheated garage as it doesn't cover that... (no matter how many times AO ring to ask if you want to add it!!!)

AddictedToBooks · 27/02/2026 15:12

I've got a heat pump dryer in my conservatory (which is freezing in winter) and my dryer is used almost daily and has been fine.

ExtraDisorganised · 27/02/2026 15:12

I never buy those anyway
