Feeling fruity...

Over summer hols whenever I bought a punnet of anything, left overnight, it would attract a couple of fruit flies. Not too bothered and thought as the weather cooled it might stop happening. For 4 weeks now I've had no fruit in the house, house is very clean, no nooks and crannies as it's a new build and new kitchen. Bin is kept outside and far from kitchen. But still I have fruit flies - they are small and there aren't many - maybe see 2 or 3 a day max!

I mentioned this to a friend in summer and she said she had the same. Now the office I work in, in a city with no food hanging around ever, has them (I don't go in so I'm not taking them with me!) and ANOTHER friend says she has them despite no fruit out (trying the same tactic as me)

What on earth is going on? I can't see what's changed this year? Can anyone advise?

UK based - no food disposal system and plugged sink, in case they are coming up from there.

If they are fruit flies you can trap them in a small dish of vinegar with a drop of washing up liquid in it. If they are sciarid flies, they won't be attracted to the vinegar. Let your houseplants dry out a bit.
